Christmas Merriments At IngallsSome time has passed since the events of the previous episode, and the sixth episode opens in a snow-covered prairie as Ingalls prepare for Christmas. It’s Laura’s favorite time of the year, and she has many fond memories of spending Christmas at her grandparents’ place. However, this time around things are going to be a bit different, they are away from their relatives, prairieland has its own uniqueness and Ingalls have to adapt accordingly. Charles isn’t even sure whether their friends in the town – John, Emily, Dr. Tann and Caleb are going to be able to attend the night before Christmas eve due to the roads being blocked by heavy snow. Upon realizing Mary has still not forgiven her, Laura’s jubilance is diminished a bit as she realizes Mary has not forgiven her still. She is not in talking terms with Caleb and Laura believes Mary blames her for the incident.
The family is also going through a financial crunch lately, as payments from farmland in Wisconsin have not reached them for several months, and they need to save enough for a plow in upcoming spring. However, Charles doesn’t want the sisters to be aware of this, and wants to make Christmas in their new home as enjoyable as they can. Caroline teaches Laura the need to appreciate little things in one’s life, while Charles asks Mary about the simmering tension between her and Laura. As someone who is still dealing with sibling issues himself, Charles sympathizes with Mary’s situation of handling both responsibilities and expectations of being an elder sister. He trusts Mary will open up according to her own convenience and eventually sort things out with Laura.
Romance Blossoms Between Emily and Dr. TannThroughout this season, plenty of hints have been shared to indicate Emily and Dr. Tann have feelings for each other, even though neither of them have mustered the courage to commit to them. At present, with town streets snowed in, Emily has to spend Christmas in her store with Caleb, as her plans to visit the Ingalls have been spoiled, but Dr. Tann is present to keep them company. Since the incident at Jemma’s place, Caleb doesn’t want to visit the Ingalls, but at the same time he is conflicted as he feels sad when their chance to visit the family indeed gets curbed. Emily is in a festive mood while reminiscing how during the past, her family’s roaming stagecoach shop almost acted as Santa’s sleigh for little kids. However, Caleb doesn’t share her enthusiasm, and Dr. Tann relates with his inability to enjoy the celebratory vibes. He reveals how after returning from war, he was never the same man and couldn’t appreciate celebrating holidays with his family ever again. He still wants to keep up an appearance for Emily so that her happiness is not curtailed, and Caleb agrees to do the same.
While speaking with Emily, Dr. Tann opens up about how his adherence to his responsibility as a medic cost him his married life. As Emily almost expresses her feelings for him, Dr. Tann fears he will disappoint her as well and abruptly leaves. Caleb has finally come around and is enjoying the festive vibes, when Emily apologizes for pushing him hard to enjoy the day instead of actually considering whether he wants to or not. Caleb opens up about Mary mentioning his parents’ abandonment, and how he himself has struggled to cope with the issue given his father indeed left him all alone at a young age. Emily comforts Caleb by trying to make him realize how much she values his presence. Later, Dr. Tann returns to Emily’s store and commits his feelings for her by sharing a kiss.
Ingalls Family’s Christmas BlissAt Ingalls’ household, the small arguments between Laura and Mary reach a tipping point when Mary mentions how Laura always seems to be everyone’s favorite, while she herself tries to do the right thing. She was never mad at her sister for the incident at Jemma’s place, she is dismayed due to such unjust treatment. Before their argument can escalate any further, Caroline goes through labor. Caroline is tensed as she has never given birth away from her home, and from her sisters – but Charles assures her that he will stay by her side and look to it that everything goes alright. Mary comforts Laura, who is quite concerned for their mother, and finally the sister reconciles as Mary finds forgiveness in her heart while opening up about her predicament as the responsible elder sister. Caroline gives birth to a baby girl child, and even though she encourages Charles to name her Georgina, he decides to name her third daughter after her mother instead.
Charles tends to their newborn child all night, and in the morning, Laura, who was under the assumption that he wanted a boy, asks her father about it. Charles remarks he couldn’t be prouder as a father to her and Mary, and feels the same joy and pride of fatherhood for little Caroline as well. Laura shows her love for her baby sister by gifting first Christmas present, by giving her beakbead ornament to her. This is the same one which she made with Good Eagle and didn’t even share with Mary, and the decision to give her prized possession to her sister shows how much Laura has grown as a person and just like Mary, she is prepared to take up the responsibility of an elder sister. The sisters give Caroline a surprise gift, a cozy rocking chair which they made on their own using reeds. The kids open up their presents, and while Caroline was skeptical whether they will like the homemade presents, they seem elated, nonetheless. John Edwards arrives to hand the kids some gifts while recounting his interaction with Santa the previous night, and his presence instantly elevates the festive mood even further. Holding little Caroline in his hands, John gives nickname Carrie, and the scene solidifies that he has once again become a core part of Ingalls family.
Later on, Emily, Caleb and Dr. Tann arrive at Ingalls household, participate in the merrymaking and make this Christmas truly the best one for Laura and Mary. Caroline receives a letter from Eliza, who continues to plead her sister to return, and has sent a good amount of money. Without mentioning the content of the letter to Charles, Caroline mentions that their expenditure for plow has been taken care of. Caleb reconciles with Mary, and at night, everyone sits together to enjoy a warm, cozy family dinner – making for a dreamy, heart-warming conclusion to the episode. Family is not always composed of people who share the same blood, but also includes those who remain by our side through thick and thin, accept us for who we are and share our joy and woes. Despite a rocky beginning, the Ingalls have found a strong foundation in their new journey in prairie, which is perfectly showcased in this Christmas episode.
