Moana live action feels like going on an island holiday

PROBABLY one of the most anticipated live-action adaptations of recent times, "Moana" finally hits the big screens. With the 2016 introductory animated masterpiece attaining great reviews and recognition, much is expected from this latest cinematic venture.

Before you know it, it has been 10 years since the original animated version came out, so it is refreshing to see a live-action version continuing to enthrall viewers.

This time, the film takes us directly into the heart of the Pacific. Shot in Hawaii amid tropical weather, it makes for incredibly nice visuals that are highly pleasing to the eyes. The film instantly puts you in a vacation and holiday mood, boasting an abundance of nature, towering palm and coconut trees, and of course, the breathtaking beauty of the ocean.

Since the animated version relied heavily on special effects to bring its magic to life, these elements look even better and more spectacular in the live-action format. This is especially true for how they successfully brought Heihei's character to life. The clueless, beloved rooster transitions flawlessly into the real world, combining realistic animal rendering with the signature chaotic comedy that fans adore.

If you have watched the cartoon version, it will be like watching the movie all over again but with more realistic visuals. However, if you didn't watch the animated version, the experience is bound to be even more exciting, as you wouldn't know what to expect and you will be completely blown away by the visual effects.

The transition also breathes new life into the musical numbers and songs. Hearing the iconic, booming soundtrack adapted for live-action adds an entirely new layer of emotional depth, making the theatrical experience feel grander and more immersive.

Superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reprises his role as Maui the demigod and does it very well. His performance is seamless, probably because he knows Maui's essence so intimately when he voiced the role a decade ago. It is genuinely refreshing to see the demigod thriving in live-action form.

Meanwhile, Catherine Laga'aia also makes for a very beautiful teenage Moana, bringing a fresh physical presence that feels slightly less fleshy compared to her animated counterpart. Because this writer watched the animated version in 2016, I was just happy that the live-action visuals did not disappoint.

Ultimately, this remains a great movie to watch with the kids. As always, the authentic lessons behind the story—about believing in yourself, following your heart, and learning to trust people—shine through beautifully.

Moana (the live action version ) is currently showing in cinemas across Malaysia.
