Spoiler Alert
What is the show about?Elite Force begins on a rainy night at the headquarters of the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, or GIGN, which is the elite tactical unit of the French Armed Forces. The young students at the force’s academy are made to go through a gruelling test, or task, in which they have to climb up a high tower and walk on a wooden plank without any safety harness, amidst heavy downpour. One of the students, a young man named Maxime Villiers, shows his skills during his time to perform, but unlike the others, he is stopped for further questioning. One of the senior officers who had been watching the whole task, and had been totally quiet for all this while, now grills Max with a number of questions about why he wants to join the force and what personal reasons have driven him to take this decision. Soon after the task ends, it is revealed that the officer grilling Max is actually his godfather, who does not want him to join the force for some odd reason.
The next morning, the GIGN is alerted of an emergency situation at the National Army’s weapons depot in Chateaudun, where a group of masked terrorists barged in with guns and killed four soldiers unprovoked. They also took two soldiers hostage, for reasons not yet clear, and most importantly, stole a large batch of an experimental explosive device called the CL-20. What is evident to David Berger, the senior officer from the previous night, and his team almost immediately is that the terrorists knew the layout of the weapons depot extremely well. They had managed to enter the place and take down the guards in a quick and precise manner, and they were also very aware of the exact locations of the security cameras, as they shot them out one by one. This makes it clear that the terrorists are either ex-military personnel themselves, or they have someone on the inside helping them out.
The terrorists had gotten away with what they had come for: the experimental CL-20 explosives that were originally made in the USA and had been secretly bought by France so that their intelligence agencies could run tests with it. Within a couple of hours, the GIGN track down the van used to steal the explosives from the army depot, and get it to stop as well, only to realize that one of the kidnapped soldiers had been forcefully strapped onto the driver’s seat with a trigger attached to his hand that would blow up the truck as soon as he let the trigger off. This was simply just a distraction planted by the terrorists to get the GIGN away from their actual next motive, which is to kill a high-ranking GIGN officer, Cristophe, at the force’s headquarters during the graduation ceremony of the new recruits.
What had actually happened to Laurent?Fifteen years back, young Max and his mother, Nathalie, were left distraught by the news of his father, and her husband, having passed away suddenly while on duty with his GIGN squad. The man, Laurent, was an accomplished officer in the GIGN, and Max now pursues the same career path clearly inspired by his father. The family had been told that the unfortunate incident had taken place at a weapons lab operated by the army, where a hostage situation had developed and Laurent and his team had been deployed to deal with the matter. But the exact details about the nature of Laurent’s passing still remains a mystery to Max, especially after he overhears a conversation between David and Cristophe, before the latter is killed in the car bombing, and so he wants to uncover the real truth.
On that fateful night, one of the workers at the lab, Victor Dutel, had given in to his dark thoughts and turned against his own colleagues, taking 21 individuals hostage, with guns he had brought, threatening to kill them all until the government fulfilled his demands. The tactical force was called on to action, and Laurent and David, who were partners in the unit, rushed in to deal with the situation. One of the hostages, a woman named Amal Mayard, had already made use of her skills with guns, as she was in the army, to shoot Dutel and kill him, but not before he managed to shoot her and also start the timer of the bombs that he had set all over the lab. This was the moment that the GIGN unit rushed in, and was told by Amal that her daughter, Lina, was still hiding somewhere inside the lab.
Lina had to be found and brought out before the bombs would detonate and blow the place up, and so Laurent and David took up the responsibility of rescuing the girl. However, the two men, who were known to be the best of friends, had recently had an argument over something, because of which Laurent had earlier asked their leader, Cristophe, to pair him with someone other than David. Such a reassignment was not possible in the moment of emergency, and the two were made to work together. As they ran into the depths of the lab in search of the girl, Cristophe ordered them to abort the mission and leave the facility immediately, since the bombs were about to explode in a minute. At this time, David tried to convince Laurent to leave, but the latter got extremely angry at his friend and pushed him out of the room. As the emergency protocols were put in place, Laurent got stuck inside the vacuum-sealed room, and although he managed to find Lina, there was no way for them to get out. Thus, the bombs exploded and killed Laurent and Lina on the spot.
Why does David want to keep Max out of the force? From the very beginning of Elite Force, David Berger is hell-bent on keeping Max out of the force and he does his best to ensure that the young man fails his final tests so that he will never be a part of the GIGN. David goes to the extent of changing the tests altogether, to specifically put Max in a situation where he has to disarm explosives. He believed that Max would fail the test owing to his personal trauma with explosives, as his father had passed away in an explosion. He was visibly conflicted when Max passed all tests with flying colors and was recruited to his squad in the GIGN. On the one hand, David was unhappy that he had failed to keep the young man out of the force, but on the other hand, he was very impressed at Max having performed the best in his class.
David actually wants to keep Max out of the force only because of a promise that he had made to Max’s mother, Nathalie, after the death of Laurent. Since David was somewhat to blame for Laurent’s death, as he had failed to convince him to leave the lab before the bombs exploded, Nathalie made him promise that he would keep Max away from the force. Young Max always loved the company of his father and his beloved uncle David, which made Nathalie quite sure that he would grow up to follow in their footsteps, and so she had made David make the promise to her. Eventually, it is revealed that there is an even more personal reason for David feeling both happy and concerned at Max’s selection.
Just a couple of days before the incident at the lab, Laurent had found out that he had always been infertile, meaning that Max could not have been his son. He then learnt that David and Nathalie had once had an affair behind Laurent’s back, and this was how he had been conceived. For the longest time, even Nathalie had not known who the father of her son was, until the test reports of Laurent, a few days before his death, revealed the secret. It was because of this very reason that David and Laurent were not on good terms on the night of the hostage situation at the lab, and when Laurent pushed David away moments before the explosion, he did so out of hatred and disappointment at his best friend having slept with his wife. Therefore, David now wanted to protect his son, Max, from any possible danger by ensuring that he was not selected by the GIGN. Yet, he also could not help but feel proud when the young man crushed all obstacles to achieve his goal and was recruited to David’s own unit.
Who is the real perpetrator behind the attacks at present? Finally, the perpetrator behind the attacks at present is revealed to be Amal Maynard, the same army official who had shot and killed the terrorist at the lab 15 years ago. Despite being shot by the terrorist, Amal was saved by the GIGN force, and therefore she experienced the crumbling feeling of seeing her daughter die in the explosion. From that very point, she held the GIGN and the authorities in general responsible for having failed to save her daughter, and more importantly, for having forced Victor Dutel into becoming a terrorist because of their corrupt and dubious practices. Her husband, Colonel Alexis Mayard, was the head of the lab where the incident took place, meaning that he was naturally a part of the army as well. But after the tragic death of their daughter, Alexis too had turned against his employers, and his country. 5 years later, he was arrested trying to trespass into the lab site, which was just a ruin then, following which he lost faith in the system even more. Over the past 10 years, Amal had put together a plan along with Alexis, to get back at the government and the nation for having ruined their lives. Now, she led a group of private soldiers, possibly with military backgrounds, to execute a series of attacks against the government.
Is Amal dead? The final stage in Amal’s revenge plan involves a direct attack against David Berger, the senior GIGN officer she remembers from the night of her daughter’s death. She had personally held all the GIGN officers responsible for failing to save Lina, and had been killing them one by one. It was she who had killed Cristophe earlier by attaching a bomb under his car, and since Laurent was already dead, David was now the only officer left to target. However, Amal did not want to kill David, but instead planned a cruel act that would make him feel the grief and despair that she had once been subjected to. Therefore, Amal and her men now force entry into the music school that David’s daughter, Manon, and hold everyone hostage, including the teenager. Thus, the finale takes place at this music school, and ultimately, David is able to find Amal. However, before he can stop her, Amal triggers the timer on the explosives and then shoots herself dead, as her plan of revenge is now complete.
Is David able to save his daughter? After Amal starts the timer, the GIGN squad is able to take down the remaining terrorists in the building and rescue all the hostages. But David’s daughter, Lina, is not fully out of trouble, as the wires connecting her to the bomb cannot be detached as easily as the ones connecting the other hostages. As a result, the officers take the risk of cutting the wire and carrying Lina out of the building hurriedly, which works in their favor as the bomb does not explode. However, this is where the final twist in Elite Force plays out, as Amal’s target had not actually been Lina, but her mother, Jessica, meaning David’s wife. When she wanted to make the senior experience the same pain as her, she knew that everybody would naturally assume that she would kill his daughter to exact revenge. But Amal’s husband, Alexis, had not only been humiliated earlier but had also been killed in the recent past. It was this pain, of losing one’s beloved partner, that Amal wanted to inflict on David, and her plan of making the officer watch his loved one die in front of his eyes succeeds by the end. Despite having saved Lina, David realizes the twist a little too late, and has to see Jessica’s car being blown up by a bomb attached under it, instantly killing her.
Are David and Max allowed to serve in the GIGN again?Elite Force ends abruptly right after Jessica is killed by the bomb attack, and we don’t get to see how the characters react to the situation. Earlier, David and Max had both been sidelined from the GIGN for having unlawfully trespassed into the lab ruins and then having killed a prime suspect, Alexis Mayard. Although it was Max who had pulled the trigger, David took the blame upon himself, until the young man revealed everything to the authorities upon learning that David is his biological father. David was fired from the service at that very moment, while Max was put under an investigation and was not allowed to train with his squad. But when the GIGN officials realized that David’s daughter was in danger at the music school, they let them get back to the field temporarily.
However, it seems unlikely that David will be allowed to return to service, or that he would even want to do so following his wife’s passing. Max might still be given a second chance, as he is still very early in his career and also the whole situation can be formally made to appear as if David had roped him into it. In case Elite Force returns with a 2nd season, we will get to see what the protagonists would be up to following the tragic incident, and it is most likely that David and Max’s bond will grow stronger, with the two of them becoming each other’s support. With Amal Mayard dead, there won’t be anyone for David to directly take revenge against, and so it can be expected that the (possible) 2nd season will deal with a new case for the GIGN elite force.
