Samsung teases Android XR glasses with phone & watch integration, 'reasonable' price

Following a partial unveiling at its Unpacked event last week, Samsung is teasing some further details of its upcoming Android XR glasses, including their “reasonable” price point.

Speaking with The Korea Times, Samsung teased its first pair of smart glasses as being defined by the fact that they will be “made by a smartphone specialist.” Whereas Meta is building the product as a standalone accessory, Samsung’s glasses will have deeper integration with the rest of the Galaxy ecosystem and, as such, are “an extension of the experience centered on the smartphone, rather than being a post-smartphone device.”

Samsung teased some of these integrations on stage during Unpacked, including some gestures on Wear OS watches to control glasses, as well as the ability to see photos captured by the glasses in a notification on your phone. It was also mentioned that the built-in speakers on the glasses would give priority to Galaxy Buds.

It was further explained that Samsung’s glasses are built to the same durability and reliability standards as Galaxy smartphones, while the focus was to build glasses that are lighter and more comfortable compared to Meta’s offerings.

As for pricing, Samsung says it is aiming for “a reasonable level,” but something in “the premium range.” By comparison, Meta’s latest glasses start at $299.

On the privacy front, Samsung added that the glasses will disable recording if the privacy light is covered or when the glasses are not being worn, as we previously noted.

Samsung’s first Android XR glasses are due to be released later this year.
