'Furious' Episode 3 Recap And Ending Explained: Who Is Isabel Luna?

Another man down! Catherine is on a revenge mission, and let’s say things are going in her favor for now. In the previous episode she faced a slight hurdle when Oliver’s daughter, Mira, showed up unannounced but she dealt with the situation quite calmly. There was possibly a part of her who wanted to hurt Mira physically, just like Oliver had hurt her, but she chose not to repeat the same mistake. In episode 3 of Furious the cops find Mira seated at the foot of her father’s bed with a pair of scissors in her hand (there was blood on it because Mira had injured herself with it). They are unable to convince Mira to hand over the pair of scissors, so Alice steps in. Alice manages to win Mira’s trust, and she tries her best to find a way to have a conversation with Mira. She claims to not remember anything that had happened, but Alice knows that if she gets a chance to question the teenager, she might just manage to get a clue that can help them move forward with their investigation.

What happened to Becky?

Becky had fallen in love with Catherine, the worst possible mistake she could’ve ever made! Catherine had taken a photo of Becky in a compromising position when they were together, knowing fully well that she might have to use the picture later to blackmail her. So, when Becky gives Catherine an ultimatum and tells her that she can’t help her anymore, Catherine shows her the picture and tells her that she doesn’t really have a choice. She will basically lose everything she has built and Becky can’t afford to let that happen. So, she buys the long list of things that Catherine had asked her to and delivers them to her at a park. 

Catherine has a face mask on, she is well aware that most public spaces have surveillance cameras. Becky hands over the items and tells Catherine that she doesn’t want to stay in touch with her. But Catherine already knows that Becky is lying to her, and she is bad at it. She is evidently in love and is pretty much ready to do anything Catherine will ask of her. Catherine puts herself at risk and removes her mask, and affectionately asks Becky to get high with her. Becky’s mind tells her not to, but her heart doesn’t listen and she ultimately follows Catherine for one last good time. Unfortunately, the good time ends tragically for her. 

Alice and her team make it to the DV facility where Catherine had briefly stayed, although the women living there are hesitant to speak to them at first, they ultimately comply and Alice finds out about Becky from one of them. She is told that Becky was close to Catherine aka “Jinny” and she is hopeful that maybe they can find more about the killer from her. As luck would have it, the very next day, Becky’s body is found at the park, she was drugged and killed, but Alice has a feeling that Catherine didn’t want to go ahead with it because of the multiple needle marks. She can’t quite figure out why Catherine killed Becky but spared Mira, both were liabilities yet she chose to spare one and let the other go. Perhaps because she feared that Becky would tell the cops about her? because she wouldn’t forget her as easily as Mira?

What did Catherine do besides murder?

Catherine transforms into Vanessa in this other world where she is a caregiver. She had taken leave from her work to kill Caleb and Oliver, obviously she didn’t tell her employer the truth, she told him that she was visiting her mother. Vanessa shares an endearing relationship with her employer, he’s wheelchair-bound and is heavily dependent on his caregiver for his everyday needs. He is relieved to see Vanessa, while she’d arranged a substitute, he clearly adores Catherine and likes having her around. She was hired by his mother right before her death, and she’d been looking after him for the last three years. I can’t help but wonder if Catherine had anything to do with his mother’s demise, she needed a place to stay and with his mother gone she had unofficially taken over her room. After she returned from her little adventure, she decided to officially move in, and her employer had no reason to object. Catherine doesn’t make much as a caregiver, so she runs an “OnlyFans” account to keep the money flowing. Her employer isn’t completely aware of it, but he is convinced that she must be scamming a few rich men to make ends meet and he simply jokes about it. It also looks like she is putting an effort into dating men, she has been through so much that presumably she never had the opportunity to fall in love, but now she wants to give herself the chance to build a genuine connection. But going on a date is not something that Catherine is used to, so she prepares herself for it, to say the right thing and react the “normal” way. “Blanchard” seems to be her date, but I won’t be surprised if he ends up having some connection with her past!

Who is Isabel Luna?

Catherine is not just seeking revenge for herself but also for her best friend, Isabel. They worked together at the “Candlelight Lounge” and she is determined to find out who killed Isabel, suggesting that they had momentarily lost contact and something must have happened to her best friend during the time. Catherine is still in touch with Isabel’s sister, Elena. She has recently left her foster home and she is back in the sex trade business. Catherine drives to the motel she is staying at and begs her not to go down the same road as her, but Elena refuses to listen. She figures she needs money to stay afloat and this is the only way she knows how to earn. Elena ends up in trouble because of Catherine, her pimp shows up and beats her for making noise. Catherine runs away from the motel but she doesn’t have a face mask on. For the first time her face is captured by the surveillance cameras and it looks like this is going to be a crucial piece of evidence for Alice.

Alice learns about Isabel when she meets Mira. The young girl has no recollection of Catherine, she can’t describe how she looks, or how she smelled, but Alice refuses to give up. After repeatedly questioning Mira, she reveals that Catherine doesn’t have any sensation in her fingertips and she also adds that her father had slept with Catherine when she was 15, this obviously is an official confirmation of the theory that Alice and Danny had come up with. She hands Alice a photograph stating that Catherine had asked her to give it to the cops. In the picture we see Oliver Charles, Caleb Easton, and his father Jay Easton together in a room, Isabel sitting on Jay’s lap and Catherine’s back facing the camera. 

Alice runs Isabel’s face through Child Protective Services and she finds a match, Isabel Luna. She had entered the system in 1998 when she was under the age of 3, she was abandoned and brought into foster care, and all her records stopped after she turned 15 in 2012 (the same time the photograph was taken). Alice suspects the picture was taken after the bodega incident since Catherine, whose face isn’t visible in the picture but who is present in the frame, is wearing the same dress. Alice is more concerned about what Catherine is trying to tell them through the photograph but Agent Choi, who has joined the case recently, thinks that digging into Jay Easton and the rest will just be a waste of time. The picture confirms that Jay, Caleb and Oliver were partying with two underage girls and something tragic must have happened that night that rattled Catherine’s world. Alice and Choi aren’t on the same page about the investigation and Nora decides that they must head back home, relax and discuss the case the next day. But Nora tells Alice that she is proud of her, she realizes that Alice feels for these girls just as much as she does, and while she had to previously work on these cases all by herself, now she has Alice to take a stand as well, which is a relief.

Why did Alice agree to meet Marshall’s mother?

Marshall too has joined the case as the lead detective, and Alice has no choice but to work with him. This is her worst nightmare, but she is so invested in the case that she refuses to back off. She tries to keep her emotions in check, and even ends up having conversations with Marshall, something that she thought was impossible a couple of days back. At the DV shelter, when Marshall notices the bruises on the face of a survivor, he freaks out. He wonders if he has done the same to Alice, during their relationship he’d been so drunk that it seems he doesn’t have much recollection of the damage he has done. Or perhaps it is his way of running away from accountability. When Alice confirms that he had hit her in the face, he feels embarrassed and apologizes to her. He begs her to meet his mother, she isn’t doing well and she has been asking Marshall to bring Alice home. Alice doesn’t consider it at first, but after Marshall compliments her work, she finds it difficult to ignore his request. She shows up at his doorstep and agrees to meet his mother. 

Alice has known his mother from a very young age, which explains why it was so difficult for Alice to walk away from an abusive relationship. Alice embraces her and listens to all the stories from her childhood days, but soon the conversation takes an ugly turn. It becomes evident that Marshall’s mother wanted to see Alice so that she could guilt her into taking back her statement and request the lieutenant to look into his promotion. Alice is furious, she grabs her coat and is about to leave but Marshall stops her. He apologizes on his mother’s behalf, he explains that all his mother wants is for her to see that he has changed. Alice doesn’t believe a word he says, but Marshall reassures her that he’s sober and he is trying his best to be better and he really wants is to make things right with Alice. 

Alice has been with this one person all her life, she hasn’t explored a romantic relationship beyond Marshall, so life has been immensely difficult for her to navigate as well. The reason why many end up trapped in their abusive relationships is that they believe that familiar struggle is better than a life without their abuser. It has been that way for Alice for the longest time, and as much as she yearns to touch the back of his neck, she knows getting back with him isn’t an option. Marshall simply wants her to call his lieutenant and let him know that she is okay and therefore he can move up the ladder. Alice chose not to file a formal complaint, and she is surprised by Marshall’s audacity to ask for more favors even after she spared him from the trouble. She refuses to talk to his lieutenant and walks out of the door, and immediately Marshall’s demeanor changes, he accuses her of having feelings for Danny while they were together and when Alice doesn’t pay heed to his words, he loudly shuts the door of her car refusing to let her leave. I’m sure Alice has been through similar situations, so she knows how these conversations usually unfold, and she pulls out her gun and asks Marshall to back off. At the end of Furious episode 3, Marshall walks back to his house, realizing that Alice isn’t anymore the submissive woman he once knew. This incident will impact Alice and Marshall’s professional relationship, but Alice has to at least pretend to be unaffected, else she will be pulled out of the case and I’m sure that’s the last thing she wants.
