Reto’s Kodak EC35 Undercuts Every Used Point-And-Shoot

A clean Contax T2 goes for four figures used right now. Even beat-up point-and-shoots from a decade ago sell for hundreds. Against that backdrop, Reto just launched a brand-new 35mm film camera under Kodak’s license for $34.99, undercutting the used market by a pretty wide margin.

One Shutter Speed. One Aperture. Fixed Focus.

The EC35 has a 25mm acrylic lens locked at f/10 and 1/100 second. No light meter, no autofocus, nothing to think about before you press the button.

You still wind and rewind the film manually, which is a nice touch of old-school friction on a camera that otherwise removes every decision it can. There’s a built-in flash for anything darker than a sunny afternoon, running off a single AA battery.

This is disposable-camera technology, basically. Load a new roll once the first is finished, rather than handing the whole unit over to a lab.

One Cool Feature

The sliding lens cover doubles as a shutter lock. Slide it shut, the camera won’t fire. Slide it open, you’re shooting. It’s lifted straight from the Olympus Stylus and Mju cameras, and it’s the single feature here that feels like someone thought about it, instead of just cutting a corner.

Seven Colours, Same Camera

The lens cover runs a shade darker than the body on every version, which is a nice detail nobody needed but I’m glad exists. At 102 grams and 119 by 65 by 41.5mm, it disappears into a jacket pocket regardless of which shade you pick.

Where It Sits In Reto’s Growing Kodak Lineup

Reto’s been building this out for a while. The Charmera is a keychain novelty. The Ektar H35 shoots half-frame for $50. The Snapic A1 tops the range at $99 with a glass lens and double exposure.

The EC35 sits below all three, full-frame 35mm, plastic lens, and the least amount of thinking required of any of them. It’s kinda like Snapic A1’s dumb little sibling for someone who’s never loaded a roll of film in their life.

No Malaysian retailer or Kodak distributor has listed the EC35 yet. RM144 is a straight currency conversion from the US price, not a confirmed local price. Right now it’s US and UK only, $34.99 and £34.99.
