'Sugar' Season 2 Episode 7 Recap And Ending Explained: Is Ray Dead?

In episode 6 of Sugar Season 2, we got a flashback sequence through which we learnt that, after coming to Earth, John’s first task was to send Peg back to their home planet because she had “assimilated” and partaken in “human” activities that were considered illegal by the aliens. But he completely botched it up because he didn’t realize that Peg was suicidal and he had to watch her self-immolate and die. In the present day, John discovered Chuy’s phone, which had been in Ji’s possession ever since his trip to the hospital. That phone had a video of Chuy, Guapo, and Ray talking about Fire Sale, thereby concretely proving that the sheriff was corrupt to the bone and he had killed Chuy because of that video. John passed on that video to Tom in the hopes that DA Deb would use it to arrest Ray; and John lost his cool when he learnt that that wasn’t enough to send Ray behind bars. As if that wasn’t horrible enough, John learnt from Tammy that Ray had forced her to confess that Ji was alive and that his death certificate was fake. Hence, John advised Danny to take Ji and move back to Korea. Danny said that that was impossible because there was nothing in Korea to go back to; LA was their home. So, in order to prevent Ray from making life hell for the Moons, John started digging up dirt on the sheriff and found out that Ray and Bruno (a mortician) had devised a housing scheme for fentanyl addicts which they were using to scam the government. John decided to use that against Ray, but Ray one-upped John by detaining Danny and threatening to hurt him if John didn’t reveal Ji’s whereabouts. What happened next? Let’s find out.

John Meets Danny In Jail

In episode 7, John is seen having a conversation with Tom about Ray threatening to hurt or kill Danny if John didn’t give up Ji to him. John wants to rope Sergey into this mess because Ray is essentially playing on Sergey’s turf and maybe if he learns about it, he’s gonna take care of Ray and the Moon brothers will be free. Tom thinks that John should leak that video to the authorities and let them do whatever they want to do with Ray. John is strictly against that because there’s no way to know how deep this rot goes. It’s totally possible that Ray is the posterboy of this scam and the state is gonna imprison or kill everyone who knows about the connection between Fire Sale and the Sheriff’s Department in order to protect their boy. Tom understands that John is too determined to talk to Sergey and he can’t be dissuaded; and he tells him to be prepared for anything and everything. John says he’s gonna meet up with Danny in the prison to see if he’s doing alright; Tom advises him to be careful because that’s the sheriff’s territory and they will be surveilling him and his conversation with Danny. John says that he’ll keep that in mind and then he calls up Ray to arrange a meeting with Danny. Ray says that, in exchange, he wants Ji. John doesn’t say “yes”; he just says that before he does anything, he wants to make sure that Danny is okay. Ray agrees and John shows up at the jail where Danny is being held. After some small talk, John reveals that he is gonna give up Ji to Ray to secure Danny’s freedom. Danny freaks out and is dragged away from the non-contact visitation booth.

Stanley Talks About Pavich’s Secret Plan

After John’s meeting with Danny, he goes to meet Stanley because the professor is having a bad day. Stanley wants to talk about his feelings and whatnot but John drops the act and reveals that he is not who he claims to be and he has been surveilling Stanley to learn about his connection with Pavich. Stanley pretends that he doesn’t know what John is talking about but John just knows too much about Stanley to fall for that nonsense, and he advises Stanley to be honest with him. He asks Stanley about the four circles and whether or not Henry was working with Pavich to betray the aliens somehow. Stanley says that the circles represent tropospheric nodes. John immediately assumes that it’s a weapon, but Stanley corrects him and says it’s to help the climate. Stanley explains that the planet is dying, so Pavich has assembled a team that can control the environment so that Earth can heal. John thinks there’s something else to it because he knows that Stanley isn’t naive enough to believe that such a radical instrument will be exclusively used for the betterment of mankind and their home. Stanley clarifies that while he thinks this is a novel concept, he is afraid that they are playing God; and every time humans have acted like gods, it has led to catastrophe. On that note, Stanley leaves. I don’t want to sound too much like a conspiracy theorist but you should read up on Operation Popeye and how, even though weather warfare is strictly prohibited, it’s believed that a lot of weather anomalies that are devastating countries are done by the CIA in order to have a monopoly on the agriculture market. Of course, we can’t deny that climate change is a real thing, but if you know anything about America, ethically speaking, you know that they will cross every line to be the “greatest country in the world.” So, maybe that’s the direction in which Sugar Season 2 is headed.

John Meets Sergey

While en route to meet Sergey, John calls up Val and asks her how Ji’s doing; Val confirms that he’s fine and they are playing video games. So, John hangs up and sits down for a meeting with Sergey. After catching up, Sergey brings up the topic of Ray. This is where it’s revealed (by John) that Ray actually works for Sergey and oversees his Fire Sale business. Now, John doesn’t care what Sergey does because he is a criminal, but he thinks that he and Ray have crossed a line by exploiting the poor, addicts to be specific. Of course, John can’t do anything about that because, as mentioned before, the rot is too deep at this point. He just wants Sergey to order Ray to give up on the Moons. In exchange for that favor, John promises to complete a job that Sergey claims John had left unfinished. Sergey thinks that that’s a fair deal and they part ways with each for the time being. When John goes back to the hotel, he calls up Ray to check if he has gotten Sergey’s order. Ray says that he won’t release Danny so easily and John makes it clear that if he doesn’t do Sergey’s bidding within the next few hours, he’s gonna end up dead; and then John hangs up. John is so sure that Ray is gonna let go of Sergey that he goes off to have a romantic time with Charlotte. They have sex, partake in some small talk, and then they open up (a little) about their past. Later that night, Tom arrives at the hotel to inform John that Sergey has died. Based on the clues available, Diego, Sergey’s son, has done a hit job on his own father because it wasn’t Sergey that was looking over the Fire Sale operation; it was Diego. It can be assumed that Sergey gave Diego an earful after his conversation with John; he might have told Diego to shut down that operation, and in retaliation, Diego had Sergey killed.

Ji Gets In Touch With Ray

While discussing next steps, John tells Tom that they have to go for Plan B, which involves killing Ray. In the meantime, Val and Ji get into a bit of a tiff over the latter’s behavior and it finally brings Ji to the realisation that he has been acting so selfishly almost his whole life. It’s something that Danny has told Ji, but it didn’t get into this thick skull, but when Val says the same thing, he understands how awful he is as a human being (the sobriety must have helped with the realization too). John meets Ray at a diner and offers him and his family (including his ex-wife) a cushy place in Panama where he can move to and forget all about this Fire Sale and Moon business. It’s obviously a bribe, but John makes it seem like this is the best way to resolve this whole predicament that they are stuck in. Ray rejects the offer and he makes it clear that he still wants Ji. John says that Ji’s testimony might just put Ray in jail and when he’s being pummeled by his inmates, he’ll regret not taking up John’s “bribe.” This is when Val enters the diner and Ray advises John to have a chat with her , because she looks nervous, and then he walks away from the offer of a lifetime. Val goes over to John and tells him that Ji is on the run. Ray overhears this conversation via the bug that has been planted on John. Before he can figure out what he’s gonna do with that info, Ji calls up Ray and tells him to come to his shack in the Mojave Desert with Danny, and Ray can take him in exchange for Danny’s freedom. Ray thinks that that’s a fair trade and heads over to that shack with Danny. When Ray starts badmouthing Ji, Danny tries to hit Ray, but Ray puts Danny in his place and places a bag over his head so that he doesn’t misbehave anymore.

Ray Is Dead

Ray reaches the shack and advises Danny to stay in the car instead of doing something stupid like making a run for it. Ray checks out the shack but Ji isn’t in there. So, he boards his car again and starts heading back to the city. Since Danny had a bag over his head, Ray seemingly doesn’t notice that John has switched places with Danny and put a bag over his own head so as to ambush Ray. Ray and John get into a furious fight which concludes with John killing Ray. Danny and Ji are reunited and they celebrate the fact that Ray won’t haunt them anymore. At the end of episode 7, John heads back home and deactivates the bug that Ray had planted in his keychain. Apparently, he knew that his keychain had been bugged when he submitted it, along with his phone, while visiting Danny at the jail. And he made sure that Ray heard exactly what he wanted to hear: that John and Val had lost Ji. So, when Ji made the call to Ray, he didn’t question the fact that Ji was actually fooling him. I think some part of John really hoped that Ray would take the bribe because he really didn’t want to murder him. Since he didn’t, John had to go all the way. He waited for Ray and Danny to arrive at the shack. When Ray went in there to surveil the place, John switched places with Danny and then he killed Ray. Anyway, while we are learning about all this, we see Charlotte inspecting John’s coat and finding the note with the four circles drawn on it. She just looks at it and then keeps it back. Meanwhile, the spectre of Peg visits John and she essentially warns him that his “assimilation” is on the brink of completion. John justifies his action by claiming what he did was necessary. Charlotte hears John mumbling to himself and asks him what’s up but John says it’s nothing. Charlotte tells John to come to bed but he sits there watching the movie that’s playing on the TV. While Ray’s death might have brought the Moon saga to an end, I think Stanley, Charlotte, Pavich, and the tropospheric nodes are gonna be the new headache for John. I can’t say for sure but it’s possible that there are two factions at play: one that wants to weaponize climate change and one that wants to stop it. Charlotte probably belongs to the latter and is trying to learn about Pavich via John. I feel that John is in for a great betrayal in the finale as he learns that Charlotte has been using him for her own purposes. Obviously, this conflict won’t be resolved in Season 2 and, if Season 3 gets greenlit, we will see John deal with a global threat.
