Just one post, one name-drop, and 14 years of silence suddenly requiring explanation.

Firdaus Wong Wai Hung, a Chinese Muslim convert with a significant social media following, posted a single provocation on Facebook today (6 August): “KL Fashion Week atau Epstein Week?” — invoking the name of convicted American sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to characterise the annual Malaysian fashion event.

By evening, the post had registered 1,100 reactions, 329 comments and 108 shares.

The comparison drew immediate pushback in the comment section.

Multiple users noted that KL Fashion Week (KLFW) — now in its 14th edition — was established in 2013 and has run continuously through the administrations of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), neither of which drew an equivalent comment from Wong.

“Kenapa tak bising masa BN dan PN memerintah?” one commenter wrote.

Another posted: “Zaman Najib dah ada fashion week ni la.”

A third observation circulated repeatedly: Firdaus had not, to commenters’ recollection, posted with equivalent urgency about Tabung Haji irregularities or the 1MDB scandal.

Epstein, an American financier, was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and died in custody the same year.

KLFW is a commercial fashion runway event held annually at Suria KLCC.

Its 2026 edition featured more than 50 Malaysian designers and labels, with programming that highlighted local craftsmanship, batik, traditional textiles, and collaborations with homegrown designers.

Special showcases at the Esplanade, KLCC Park, ran alongside the main runway programme.

The week-long event, per organisers, was positioned as a platform for Malaysian creative and cultural identity.
