MAG tightens pilot drug screening after Jakarta detention, clarifies detained pilot was off duty

SHAH ALAM - Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has introduced mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots following the detention of a second officer at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport last week.

MAG said the screening is expected to be completed by Aug 15, with pilots who fail to undergo the screening by the deadline to be grounded.

The measure supplements the airline’s existing random drug testing programme, with MAG also planning to extend the enhanced screening to active cabin crew.

The move follows the detention of the second officer by Indonesian authorities after narcotics were reportedly found in his luggage on July 28 last month. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

MAG President and Group Chief Executive Officer Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar said the airline would take action against any breach of its safety and fitness-for-duty requirements.

“Operational safety and crew fitness for duty are non-negotiable at MAG. We take any breach of our safety standards seriously and have acted swiftly to enhance mandatory drug screening across our active pilots,” he said in a statement.

MAG also clarified that the detained second officer was off-duty in the preceding days and was travelling to Jakarta as a jump-seat observer.

The aircraft was operated by two qualified pilots throughout the flight, MAG said.

The incident has also raised questions over existing crew screening and monitoring procedures, particularly whether current random testing and pre-employment checks are sufficient to identify potential risks involving active crew members.

MAG said its existing safety measures include pre-employment screening, Class 1 medical certification, pre-flight IMSAFER peer assessments and access to its Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

The airline, meanwhile, said it would continue cooperating with aviation regulators and law enforcement authorities as investigations into the Jakarta case continue.
