DAP state delegates support party staying in unity govt

PUTRAJAYA - A total of 14 state DAP delegates support the party remaining in the unity government to fulfil election promises and ensure the country's political stability.

The support was voiced during the debate on the motion on whether DAP should remain in the federal government until the end of the current parliamentary term at the DAP 2026 National Conference at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here today.

Among the main reasons highlighted by the delegates included continuing the people's mandate to implement institutional reforms, strengthen efforts to combat corruption, reduce the cost of living, protect the rights of the multi-racial community, maintain policy stability and avoid the risk of the General Election (GE) being held early.

Perak delegate Jason Ng Thien Yong stressed that DAP must continue to remain in government and plan effective reform measures to gain the people's mandate in the upcoming GE.

"Despite facing defeat in several previous state elections, we must make the right decision to remain. The unity government may have weaknesses, and that is why changes must continue to be implemented from within," he said.

In line with that view, DAP veteran from Pahang Leong Ngah Ngah called on delegates to be mature given that the unity government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proven various successes and brought about reforms over the past three years.

"When in government, we are able to push for the implementation of promised reforms. Decisions made by delegates must be based on maturity," he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor delegate Muhammad Shakir Amerr Mohideen also expressed his full support for DAP to remain in government and believed in the party's ability to rise again.

He believed that good governance practices and DAP's work performance could restore the confidence of voters in areas that had previously lost.

Meanwhile, Melaka delegate Jason Tze-Xi Nathan believed that maintaining DAP's position in the government was the best move compared to having to explain to the people if the party decided otherwise.

Meanwhile, Sabah delegate Yap Wui Lip urged the party to remain in government while continuing to speak out loudly demanding the implementation of reforms, including the rights enshrined under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

In addition, other delegates who also supported DAP remaining in government were Azaha Abdul Rani (Kelantan), Ng Chai Hing (Terengganu), Soo Tien Ren (Sarawak), Lim Hooi Yee (Kedah), S Mugunthan (Negeri Sembilan), Wong Bor Yang (Johor), Sangeet Deo (Kuala Lumpur), Chew Chin Lee (Perlis) and Daniel Gooi Zi Sen (Penang)

Meanwhile, secretary-general Anthony Loke during the winding up of the debate said that his party accepted all the suggestions and criticisms given by all 14 representatives representing their respective state committees.

"If this motion is supported and expressed through a vote, if we remain in government, it will not mean a 'blank cheque' to the Central Supreme Committee (CEC) or the Prime Minister. Of course, the commitment to bring reforms and renewal to regain the people's confidence and support is the most important prerequisite," he said.

A total of 4,264 delegates from 1,704 eligible branches will make a decision on the motion through secret ballot after a debate session before Loke will table the motion to determine whether the party will continue to remain or withdraw from the administrative bloc until the end of the 16th parliamentary term.

This year's conference is also being held in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of DAP, which is one of the three main component parties of Pakatan Harapan (PH) besides PKR and Amanah. - BERNAMA
