[VIDEO] Remain in Unity govt but reassess ties with Anwar – DAP's Sangeet

PUTRAJAYA – DAP should remain in the unity government for now, but the party must reassess its relationship with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

DAP Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur delegate Sangeet Kaur Deo said the party should remain in the Federal Government as it needs more time to rebuild trust and confidence in the party.

“We can highlight the various reforms implemented by our ministers, and there have indeed been many.

“At the ministry level, various initiatives have been implemented and they are robust.

“But we cannot ignore the bigger problems facing the party. On many issues, we have chosen to remain silent because we do not want to jeopardise the stability of the government,” she said.

The lawyer was speaking during the 2026 DAP National Congress at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here on Sunday.

Sangeet said DAP could not escape the reality that the current government was becoming increasingly divided over racial issues, unlike previously.

She added that the party also could not deny the existence of several corruption-related controversies that had increasingly drawn attention during its time in government.

“We were given the mandate to govern on the promise that we would fight corruption.

“Have we done so? Not yet. Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on 47 charges against him.

“We are also facing controversies involving national institutions, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” she said.

Sangeet alleged that Umno had also openly attacked DAP despite both parties being part of the same Federal Government coalition.

“Are they really coalition partners that we can work with?

“Therefore, I urge the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) to seriously reassess our relationship with Anwar.

“Instead of bringing coalition partners together, what has he done? He has divided us and pitted one side against another.

“He has strengthened Umno. Why? We cannot ignore this,” she said.

All 14 state delegates who delivered their speeches were seen supporting the motion for DAP to remain in the unity government.

DAP delegates have voted to remain in Anwar's Federal Cabinet, opting to maintain their participation in the unity government despite a series of electoral setbacks.

A total of 1,857 delegates voted for the party to remain in the government, while 242 voted against.

According to Speaker Cha Kee Chin, 2,106 ballot papers were issued, of which 2,099 were deemed valid while seven were spoiled.

Of the valid votes, 88.2 per cent of the delegates supported the motion for the party leadership to remain in the Federal Government. A total 11.5 per cent, rejected the motion.
