The Birthday Party Ending Explained And Movie Recap: Is Sofia Really Pregnant?
Leave it to Willem Dafoe to convince you he’s a completely different character in every project he’s in. The man is a chameleon, and yet, somehow, he’s always Willem Dafoe underneath it all, the man we all love and cherish. No matter what sort of loathsome character he’s playing, the sheer charisma the man brings to the screen is enough to pull the weight of the entire film. Miguel Angel Jimenez’s family drama “The Birthday Party” solely relies on Dafoe’s shoulders, and he brings his A-game to make sure the audience stays invested in the film rather than reaching for their phones. Set on a dreamy island that perfectly captures the picturesque landscape Harold Pinter described in his original play, which serves as the film’s source material, it’s a visually stunning film with a rather weak plot. But if you have a taste for the finer things in life and some stellar performances, this is just the right film for you.
Spoilers Ahead
What happens in the film?Marcos Timoleon is a filthy rich Greek businessman who lives on his own island, yep, he’s that rich. But when his older son dies in a plane accident, he breaks down mentally, and his younger daughter, Sofia, grows distant from him. After a few years, Marcos has decided to host an opulent party for Sofia’s birthday, and he’s excited to meet his daughter after a long time. Through a voiceover, which can either be a diary entry or a tape recorder itself, Marcos says that he has to do something that Sofia might not like, but she will understand his decision, since that’s what a family does best. You’re then introduced to Marcos in person, completely naked, stretching and exercising like one normally does when they’re naked. As the guests for the party start to arrive, Marcos gets his checkup done by his old friend, Patrikios, who’s rather surprised to see that Marcos has a mini hospital on his island with all the necessary equipment and machinery. However, the rich old man still cannot help but mourn his son, and wonder how his life would’ve been if Daniel was alive and he could retire. Meanwhile, Sofia is hiding a secret that Marcos probably knows about, but it’s huge nonetheless. She’s having an affair with Marcos’ biographer, a young lad named Forster, and he’s gotten her pregnant. Sofia has decided to go ahead and have the baby, but even though she assumed she could convince her father about the same, but Forster knows Marcos better than that. So even though Forster is painfully attracted to his boss’ daughter, so much so that he hops on her to have coitus with her by the beach, this secret affair is never supposed to end well.
Why does Marcos ask Olivia to manipulate his daughter? The film is based on the time of the escalating Western Sahara crisis between Spain and Morocco, with the US playing the mediator. So a powerful man called Marquis tries his best to convince Marcos that he should wed Sofia to his son. In exchange, Marcos receives many airports, the apartheid mines, and a few ports to make the marriage happen. Marquis is counting on General Franco dying soon and for the Sahara crisis to be over, and for Marcos, this alliance would actually be quite fruitful. So without wasting any time, Marcos calls his wife, Olivia, for a meeting. After the death of his first wife, Marcos married Olivia, but neither of them value each other anymore. Olivia wants out, and she’d even give up alimony just to make sure that she gets a divorce. Marcos is quite jolly about the fact that they’re going to be divorcees, as he plans to make sure that the two of them don’t have any bad blood between them. But Olivia is much less deluded than Marcos, so when he asks her to convince Sofia to leave Forster, she knows very well that her stepdaughter can barely stand her, let alone take her advice. Marcos won’t budge, and he pretty much sets Olivia up for failure.
What goes down in Sofia’s party?Another audio recording tells us that Marcos obviously knows about Sofia’s pregnancy, but he’s far too paranoid about his legacy to let his daughter interfere with it. Meanwhile, we see Sofia boozing and snorting coke right before she makes an entrance to her birthday party. When Olivia approaches Sofia to wish her happy birthday, she’s immediately shown her place by the young lady. However, Marcos isn’t in any mood to let anyone ruin his perfect performance as the devoted father. But the man can’t help but mention his dead son in his speech, and he somehow manages to make the speech more about Daniel than Sofia. He does make it up with a rather marvelous birthday gift for Sofia, a stunning white horse dressed up as an unicorn. As the party rolls on, Sofia gets sick, and Olivia follows her. Seeing that Olivia genuinely wants to help, Sofia confides in her about the pregnancy. Olivia is an empathetic woman by nature, so she welcomes the news and congratulates her, as well as dropping her own plan to manipulate Sofia to leave her commoner boyfriend. On the other side of the island, we see Marcos pretty much sealing his daughter’s marriage to Marquis, while reflecting on how God made children selfish willingly so that parents can learn to let them spread their wings. Marcos also instructs his confidant, Kostas, to make sure his estate looks after Marquis, even if he doesn’t end up being his son-in-law. But when Olivia informs Marcos about her failed attempt at swaying Sofia, he loses all his calm, and we see him throwing a fit for the first time in the film. You see how this Megalomaniac oligarch truly thinks, as he automatically assumes his money and position puts his wishes over everybody else. Olivia tries to convince him to change his mind, since Sofia is the last of his bloodline, but Marcos is far too mad to think straight.
How does Marcos manipulate Forster?Sofia brought a few secret paparazzi to document the party. She wanted leverage over her dad in case he tried to pull any moves when she revealed her pregnancy and her desire to marry Forster. One of them gets caught, leading Marcos to believe that he has everything under control. As the celebrations resume, Forster grows more and more uncomfortable, seeing his lover socialising with other men and somewhat realising that their worlds are very different. Marcos then calls Forster in a secret room to make an offer he simply can’t refuse. Firstly, he gives Forster the permission to publish his biography unedited. Then comes a big fat check to leave Sofia and their unborn baby for good, but he must be gone for life. Forster isn’t strong-willed enough to turn this huge opportunity down just for love, and as he sees Sofia chatting with Marquis, he probably thinks the decision he made is better for both of them. Kostas also convinces Forster that this world doesn’t have any place for people like them, and that Marcos respects him more than he expresses. Forster is smart enough to know that it’s simply not worth the hassle to go against the great Marcos Timoleon, so he makes his choice.
How does Marcos control Sofia?Olivia is pretty heartbroken over the fact that even though she still loves Marcos, he isn’t a man that you can picture a life with. So without sulking over it, she decides to loosen up and jump in the pool, completely naked. The other party people follow her as well, and the party now looks how one would imagine these parties to be like. Then comes the biggest confrontation, as Marcos and Sofia finally lay their cards bare, showing each other their true selves. Marcos admits that since Daniel died, he couldn’t cope with his grief and he forgot how to even talk with Sofia, let alone be a good father. Sofia also gives him a reality check and says that he was far too obsessed with his introverted son, and it ruined both their lives. When Marcos confronts Sofia about the pregnancy, she threatens him with the fact that she has more paparazzi sneaking around the island, and that she’s already arranged for an exclusive press conference the next morning. But it’s kind of foolish for Sofia to think that she can ever outsmart her scheming father, who controls and spies on every little thing that happens on his island. So Marcos simply informs Sofia that he’s already come to an arrangement with her boyfriend, and that’s the best for everybody. Sofia loses her calm, and tells Marcos that he’d rather want her to be dead than Daniel, and this statement truly sends Marcos off the rails. He puts Sofia in the same bracket with all the other women in his life who are “crazy and bitter.” Even when Sofia tells him that he once had an erection after seeing her when she was a teenager, Marcos decides to stay in denial, kiss her forehead, and tell her everything will be fine!
Is Sofia really pregnant? My favourite part of the film is the fact that the people who are attending the party have nothing to do with the family drama that’s playing out in the background. After getting drenched, most of them just start making out with one another, while Sofia drowns her sorrows all alone, with more booze and coke. Forster is wandering about, and the poor guy loses his girlfriend and gets kicked by her new horse at the same night. The next morning, we see him leaving the island with the guests, and Marcos has brought in doctors and nurses to perform the abortion for his daughter. When Kostas goes to bring Sofia for the procedure, she’s nowhere to be found. Marcos hears about it and absolutely loses his head, thinking that she’s either ran away or killed herself. Thankfully, that’s not the case, as Sofia has just passed out on a rock by the ocean. After Patrikios makes sure that she’s okay, Marcos asks his old friend to do the abortion while she’s still knocked out. Patrikios can’t believe that Marcos would stoop so low to sabotage his daughter, only to hear him say that if he doesn’t do the procedure, the other doctors will. But Marcos doesn’t get the last laugh, as Patrikios informs him that Sofia isn’t even pregnant. Patrikios leaves the island, telling Marcos that they’re not friends anymore. When Sofia finally wakes up, she reveals that she did get pregnant seven weeks ago, but then she lost the baby. She wanted to get pregnant again with Forster, so she just decided to not tell him the truth and keep trying, which explains her seducing Forster to have intercourse earlier in the film. Marcos knows that this nightmare is over for him now, so he even refuses to acknowledge his daughter and her pain, and the man goes for a stroll. The credits start rolling with Marcos singing Nina Simone’s 1964 classic “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” which doesn’t make much sense judging by his character. While the original play explores his character much more deeply, the film barely touches on his origins. Despite that, Dafoe does a fantastic job of making us feel the constant conflict and narcissism simmering beneath Marcos’ surface, all the goddamn time.
