'Spooky In Love' Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Does Yeo-Ri Survive The Accident?
Unfortunately, another K-drama has been lost to the curse of a good start and a terrible ending. Spooky In Love started out as a show about two people who get close while solving crimes. Somewhere in the middle, the crime-solving stopped, and the romance began. But then the romance disappeared, and what remained was just a show where two people like each other a lot but can’t be together because of superstitions. I’ve always enjoyed Yang Se-Jong as an actor, and Park En-Bin, of course, but even they couldn’t save this show in the end, because it falters pretty badly. I wish the romance had been a bigger part of the show, and given us something real instead of this superficial ending. I just felt like the show went downhill after the ghost stopped appearing. But maybe that’s me, so without further ado, let’s jump into the show’s finale.
Spoiler Alert
How Does Yeo-Ri Wake Up?Spooky In Love episode 11 ended with Yeo-Ri getting hit by a truck after she saved Gang-Uk from certain death by pushing him out of the way of said truck. In episode 12, after taking Yeo-Ri to the hospital, Gang-Uk seems to find himself unconscious from heartache. We know that Gang-Uk has no ordinary heart, but his grandmother is reassured that this is just a stress response and nothing’s really happened to worry about. When he wakes up, he immediately goes to see a comatose Yeo-Ri. Later at night, he overhears his grandmother talking to Min-Hwan’s mother. This is the first time he hears the name of the person who gave him his heart. He also connects the dots and realises that Ji-Hwan is Min-Hwan’s brother.
So, the next day, especially since Yeo-Ri isn’t waking up, Gang-Uk heads off to Ji-Hwan’s memorial site and pays his respects. He also returns the necklace to Ji-Hwan. In the meantime, in what we can call the world in between earth and heaven, Yeo-Ri finds herself meeting up with all the ghosts she helped in the past. At last, a Grim Reaper-like entity shows up and takes her hand, but thanks to the necklace being back with Ji-Hwan, the guy’s able to stop Yeo-Ri from going away with the Grim Reaper. He essentially has now saved both their lives, and Yeo-Ri’s a second time now. Ji-Hwan makes sure she doesn’t feel guilty about what happened to him, and then tells her how important it is for her to go back. I suppose the curse was lifted when she held the hands of the ghosts as a dead person. Ji-Hwan mentions the warmth of her touch, so I guess they basically fixed her as a unit.
Ji-Hwan explains how everyone came to see Yeo-Ri off as a gift for helping them; they just want to repay her. Ji-Hwan is the one who goes onto the Grim Reaper’s boat in her stead, and on the other hand, Yeo-Ri wakes up with Gang-Uk and her grandmother holding her hand. It seems a near-death experience is all she needed to stop seeing ghosts. Also, Madam Pang finally apologizes to Yeo-Ri, now that she knows she risked her own life for Gang-Uk. This means the couple can finally be happy together and not worry about getting in trouble.
What Happens With Min-Hwan?On the other hand, the big secrets that Min-Hwan has hidden so far need to be exposed, and Gang-Uk has lost the one piece of evidence he had to nail the guy. Yeo-Ri and Gang-Uk end up in Seung-Jae’s childhood home, the place where he was found last before his death. She finds the camcorder just as Gang-Uk shows up. But they find the evidence they need and leave the house. I don’t know how this is legal, but okay. Yeo-Ri then decides to expose Min-Hwan in public by handing the memory card of the camcorder to his mum on his brother’s memorial service day. Min-Hwan is meant to be honoring Ji-Hwan, but instead, thanks to Yeo-Ri, it becomes a scandalous evening where a killer is exposed. Min-Hwan’s mum says she will keep him away from the business and chairmanship until it’s proven that the video is a fake. But it’s too late by then, because at the same time, Gang-Uk has got a search warrant for Min-Hwan’s house and found the camera that Seung-Jae had set up, proving that Min-Hwan killed Seung-Jae.
Finally, Min-Hwan is arrested for both his crimes; even if the other one was 12 years ago, he’s got no chance of escaping the second one. However, despite everything, his mother is willing to give him another chance after he’s rehabilitated. Min-Hwan made a fool of himself, feeling like everybody only cared about his younger brother and that he was just adopted, so nobody genuinely cared about him. It’s quite sad to think about, but maybe he’ll earn back his place in the family much later in the future, when he’s done repenting.
What Happens at Reina? On the other hand, Ok is exposed for her scam and slush funds, and everyone working with her gets in trouble. A search warrant is issued for her home, and she faints at the idea of them searching her safe. Ok gets arrested, meaning finally everything will be peaceful at Reina.
In Spooky In Love’s ending, a year has passed since Gang-Uk had to transfer to a remote location, but now he’s been promoted to deputy chief in Seoul. Yeo-Ri surprises him in Andong, and he tells her about his promotion then. It looks like the distance hasn’t kept them apart at all, and despite some hiccups, they’re very much together now. The show ends on the happy note that Yeo-Ri can now hold the hands of people and doesn’t have to wear gloves anymore. She doesn’t have to seem aloof or distant to anyone ever again because she’s able to hold their hands and make them feel like she genuinely cares. Yeo-Ri is now also acting chairwoman of the company and will continue to look after and protect her family legacy. Finally, Yeo-Ri and Gang-Uk get to walk holding hands, just as Yeo-Ri wished for all that time ago.
Yeo-Ri and Gang-Uk’s story is sweet and wholesome. They didn’t need to hold hands to feel the warmth of each other, initially. Min-Hwan tried so hard to ruin everything for her because he couldn’t handle rejection, not just from her but previously from his family too. I don’t think they ever abandoned him or thought less of him. I get the feeling it was always Min-Hwan who misjudged everybody and ruined his family’s life because of that. Ultimately, he killed Ji-Hwan on purpose to become the family fave. That’s going a bit too far, buddy. Gang-Uk did have to face the consequences of being way too straightforward and messing with the wrong people, but eventually that’s sorted out too, and with Yeo-Ri by his side, though he’s in search of miracles, I don’t think there’ll be any more mischief.
