'The Testimony Of Vince Young' Recap: Where Is Vince Now?

Netflix’s beloved sports documentary series, Untold, is back with a fresh season again, kicking things off with a story from college, and then NFL football, with the former quarterback Vince Young at its center. After his explosive stint in college football, everyone expected Vince Young to be the next star quarterback in the NFL, but he could never really impress in the big league after getting there. The Testimony of Vince Young takes a deep-dive into his career, and tries to question why his NFL career could not really take off, with the ex-athlete himself sitting down to explain his situation.

How did Vince Young burst onto the football scene?

Born into a financially struggling family in the 4th Ward neighborhood of Houston, Vince Young had a rough childhood, not just because of his family’s day-to-day existence, but also because of the hostile atmosphere around him. His father, Vincent Young Sr., was mostly absent from his life and the family, as he was constantly in and out of jail for repeated crimes. Vince was exposed to problems like alcoholism and violence from a very young age, and the boy started playing football seriously only because he sought respite from all the troubles back at home. He attended Madison High School in Houston, where he quickly learned how to focus on his goals, which at the time, revolved around becoming the very best football player in his school. One of his core dreams from this point was to become a professional football player, not just for the fame and recognition, but more so for the money he would earn, which he could then use to uplift his family.

One of his strongest personality traits was to grow determined to succeed at a specific goal whenever anyone told him that he could not do it, and this was exactly how Vince started playing the quarterback position, for everyone around him stated that he did not have the physique for it. Over the years, he became one of the top junior football players in the country, catching the attention of college football teams and coaches, and his versatility became one of the prominent talking points about his game. Despite being 6’5” and 225 pounds already, Vince could run extremely fast and jump very high, along with throwing the football with speed and precision. Soon enough, the youngster became the face of the Madison Marlins high school football team, and crowds flocked to see the hot prospect play.

Therefore, when Vince was nearing the end of high school, he started getting letters from all the top colleges in the USA, asking him to join their program and help their teams compete in the NCAA championships. He had always wanted to go to Florida State and be a part of their football team, and although he did receive a letter from the college as well, they had clearly mentioned that they wanted Vince to play as a wide-receiver. This, however, was totally unacceptable to him, as he wanted to continue developing his game as a quarterback, and this was when the University of Texas reached out, with their coach at the time, Mack Brown, personally reaching out to the player, even paying his family a visit at their home. Vince was ultimately convinced, and he became part of the Texas Longhorns football team, hoping to achieve his dream of becoming a superstar in the NFL someday. What neither he nor his coach predicted was how he would become an absolute revelation in college football, and a lifelong icon for the Longhorns. 

During his freshman year, in 2003, Vince did score a few touchdowns, mostly by running the yards himself, but his throwing was nowhere close to his high school performances. As a result, he spent the year mostly on the bench, struggling to fit into Coach Brown’s strategies whenever he was given the chance to play. During the 2004 preseason, Vince felt he was ready to be a starter in the team, but during one of the games, the backup quarterback was chosen over him, and this terribly hurt his ego. Vince was totally convinced that he wanted to transfer away from University of Texas, until his idol, Steve McNair, called him and calmed him down. A few years earlier, Vince had attended McNair’s football camp, and had got to know his hero personally. With time, the NFL star had somewhat become like a father figure to Vince, as the latter always went to him to discuss any problems he was having.

Steve McNair must have found out about Vince’s struggles fitting into the Longhorns team from Mack Brown, and he reached out to the youngster. With Vince willing to give the team another chance, Brown finally trusted him to play his own game, and this quickly established the youngster as one of the best quarterbacks in the college football league. The Longhorns lost just once in their first 11 games of the season, and were helmed by the explosive youngster, who was finally matching the performances from his high school days. He led the team to that year’s Rose Bowl, which is a ceremonial and prestigious match played between the two most exciting teams in the season, on New Year’s Day. His performances also won the team the game, which they played against Michigan, and Vince Young became a household name overnight.

The next year, Vince and Coach Brown were both determined to go and win the NCAA Championships, which they knew would be a tough task, since college football did not have playoffs at the time, and so whoever topped the league would win. This meant that the Longhorns could not afford to lose, since the Trojans of the University of South California were on a red-hot streak. Having won the national championships in two back-to-back seasons, and having never lost a single game in almost three years, the Trojans were the team to beat for the Longhorns, but they needed to put themselves in a position to win the championships in the first place. The team were successful in doing so, and Vince was in contention to win the Heisman Trophy as well, which is given to the best college football athlete of the season. But when he did not win the personal accolade, Vince grew even more determined to prove his worth in the game against the Trojans. Ultimately, Vince scored in the last seconds of the game, that too by running with the football himself, and won the Texas Longhorns their first NCAA championship in 35 years, becoming an absolute hero for the college.

Why did the athlete fail to perform in the NFL?

After the triumph in the 2005 season, Mack Brown himself advised Vince to skip his senior year and make himself available for the NFL draft right away. While Brown was confident that they would win another NCAA championship if Vince stayed, he wanted the youngster to start earning money as soon as possible, so that he could take the helm of his family, and Vince wanted the same thing. Therefore, he decided to turn pro, and amidst a lot of anticipation and hope for a great future, the Tennessee Titans picked him as the 3rd overall pick ahead of the 2006 season. Vince was ecstatic about the fact that he would get to play alongside his idol, but Steve McNair was traded to the Ravens ahead of the season. But this worked in the rookie’s favor, for he was immediately chosen to start the games for the struggling Titans.

His debut game in the NFL, and the next few games, went just how he had planned, and everyone believed that Vince Young would definitely carry on his form from his high school and college days. Leading the team to an 8-8 season, which was significant progress, considering the Titans’ performances in the previous seasons, Vince was also named the 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year. It felt like the athlete had finally arrived at the elite stage, and he naturally became the centre of attention as well. Vince became the first rookie ever to become the cover-athlete for the 2006 Madden NFL video game, and celebrities from various fields started to become his friends. But this extreme level of attention started getting to his head, and despite being a rookie in the league, he started developing behavioral issues. 

The fact that Vince was a regular starter for the team, and also one of the young stars in the league, made him believe that he was above the administration and the coaching team. He was reportedly late to training a number of times, before something unusual happened as he arrived at the airport late, and the team plane flew without him. According to Vince, heavy traffic due to some accident had made him late that day, and the fact that he had almost reached the plane on the runway when the coach decided to shut the door and take off without him made him angry. The coach was also of the opinion that the quarterback was getting too distracted by everything else that was happening in his life at the time, especially the glitz and the glamor of being an up-and-coming superstar. Vince apparently started missing training sessions, meetings, and treatment sessions simply because he arrived late, and it seemed like he was struggling to deal with the extreme popularity he was enjoying. The off-pitch noise started affecting his fitness as well as his performances, and he seemed to be losing his potential very quickly.

Aside from the supposed ‘distractions,’ what affected Vince Young most during his time at the Tennessee Titans was his souring relationship with general manager and head coach, Floyd Reese. Vince had played under mostly Black coaches in his career up till that point, with the only significant exception having been Mack Brown. According to him, he always struggled to cope with the cultural differences that he faced under white coaches, and while Brown had successfully helped him adapt to his style of discipline, Reese completely failed to do the same. Floyd Reese understandably believed that Vince should be treated like everyone else in the team, and therefore be subjected to the punishments that anyone else would in case of a mistake. Vince, on the other hand, felt that Reese was being extra tough on him, essentially wanting to prove his point to the rest of the team by sacrificing him.

At the peak of their souring relations, Vince also found out that Coach Reese had never really wanted him on the team, but it was only because the owner, Bud Adams, wanted the youngster in the team that he had been drafted. Apparently, this strong wish to draft Vince was born out of Adams’ hatred against an ex-mayor, who desperately wanted the New Orleans Saints to sign the talented youngster. Therefore, Adams hijacked the deal just to hurt his enemy, meaning that Vince was never really assumed to be a good fit for the team. After having found out about this, the tension between Vince and Reese grew even more, often spilling onto the media, and the quarterback was now slowly starting to seem like an overhyped youngster who was simply not ready for the NFL.

Did Vince Young really try to take his life?

During the first game of the 2008 season, Vince suffered a horrific injury, which sidelined him for possibly the entire season. Unable to take the stress and the pressure of the situation, and also self-admittedly too irritated by the attention he was getting even at this time, Vince did something quite shocking. He stormed out of the team facility and sped away in his car, apparently waving his gun over his head, as if considering taking his own life. Fearing the worst, Coach Reese called the athlete and asked him to drive to the Titans’ home stadium, where he actually had a few police officers waiting, so that they could jump in and deescalate the situation. As soon as Vince arrived and realized what was going on, he vehemently denied having had any thoughts of harming himself, but neither the coach nor the police believed it. A journalist managed to take photos of the incident, and Vince was then made to go through intense sessions with the Titans’ official psychologist. 

The incident was widely reported in the media the next day, with the hot debate becoming whether Vince had really considered ending his own life. According to Vince Young himself, he never had any such thoughts, and while he might have pulled out his gun out of rage and frustration, he had no intentions of hurting anyone. But according to official reports, he had consulted the team psychologist multiple times before the incident, and had also supposedly suggested that he had plans of harming himself ‘several times.’ Vince believes that this was all a lie and a setup planned to make him look weak and unfit for the NFL, but he still managed to come out of the scandal relatively unscathed. 

While Vince Young possibly did not plan on taking his own life, he did have the occasional dark thought cloud over his mind, especially because of the troubles in his personal life. Vince always felt sad and angry about the fact that his father was never around to see his wins, as the man kept busy with his drug-abuse and criminality, which kept him in prison for the longest possible time. After growing up, he had found real support in his idol, Steve McNair, and so when the latter died in a shootout in 2009, Vince was left distraught. A few years later, he also had to go through the shattering experience of his agent, Major Adams, having allegedly stolen funds from him and made dubious investments in his name. As a result, Vince had to file for bankruptcy in 2014, which naturally affected his family as well.

Where is the ex-NFL footballer now?

Despite having shown brilliant potential in high school and college football, Vince Young was unable to deliver on the promise when he ultimately reached the NFL, for the various internal and external factors stated above. After having a dressing-room altercation with the coach after a defeat in the 2010 season, Vince and the Titans decided to part ways, and he signed for the Philadelphia Eagles. While many hoped that this would be a turn-around in his career, Vince was released just a year later, and he joined the Buffalo Bills. Vince’s performance had deteriorated so drastically that he then struggled to last even 6 months at any team, moving on from the Bills to the Green Bay Packers, and then to the Cleveland Browns, ultimately retiring in 2014. Following his retirement, Vince was appointed by the University of Texas in multiple positions over the years, and since 2025, he has been back in the world of football as an expert and podcaster. As he himself admits in the Netflix interview, Vince Young is much more invested in giving his all to his wife and children, desperately wanting to be a constant figure and a good role model in their lives, unlike his own father, whose absence still clearly hurts him to this day.
