South Korea’s top presidential aide resigns following cabinet reshuffle

Kim Yong-beom was a key adviser to Lee on economic policy, including on housing and ⁠stock market issues.

Kim had offered to step down from the post on Monday, which oversees the administration’s economic and domestic policy agenda.

During his term, Kim had drawn criticism over the rapid introduction of single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds tied to Samsung Electronics

and SK Hynix. The products, launched in May as part of an effort to draw retail money into domestic equities, later helped amplify extreme market swings and prompted regulators to tighten investor safeguards.

His proposal for a potential “citizen dividend” funded by excess tax revenue from the AI boom also triggered public debate, and fuelled market speculation over how the government might use the windfall. Kim later said that the idea involved distributing excess tax receipts rather than tapping company profits.

President Lee had accepted Kim’s ‌resignation on Tuesday, his office said. It did not immediately disclose the reason for his resignation or name a successor.
