Long Lellang heli crash: Victims’ remains being flown to Miri for DNA identification

MIRI, Sept 9: The remains of all five victims of the helicopter crash near Long Lellang in Ulu Baram have been recovered and are being transported to Miri by helicopter.

The remains are being flown by a Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak helicopter to hospitals in Miri, where family members are waiting to assist with the identification process.

The victims’ identities are expected to be formally established through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing.

The five victims were on board a BO-105 helicopter which crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) port in Ulu Baram, about 929 kilometres from Kuching.

The helicopter had departed from Miri and was conducting a Flying Doctor Service (FDS) operation when the incident occurred.

Those on board comprised the pilot, a medical officer, an assistant medical officer (PPP) and two nurses, all of whom were on official duty at the time.

The recovery operation involved personnel from a multi-agency team, including Bomba, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) forensic team, Marudi District Police Headquarters as well as representative from Layang-Layang Aerospace and Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB).

The remains will undergo the necessary identification procedures upon arrival in Miri, with DNA analysis to be used to confirm the identities before they are handed over to their respective families.
