MCA expects GE16 within four to five months

MCA expects the 16th General Election (GE16) to be held within the next four to five months, based on the record of previous governments that dissolved Parliament before completing a five-year term, party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said.

He said governments had generally not waited until the end of the five-year parliamentary term before calling an election.

“If we look at the 15 general elections held previously, how long did each administration last? I think it was around four years, more or less, or three years and eight to 11 months.

“If it is to be expedited, I think that is what would normally happen. It would not reach five years,” he told reporters after opening the MCA Johor Annual Convention in Yong Peng yesterday.

Wee said MCA was ready for GE16 and would continue strengthening its machinery nationwide.

He said the timing would have to take into account the festive calendar, with Chinese New Year falling in February next year, followed by the start of Ramadan on the second day of the festival and Hari Raya Aidilfitri in March.

“We have to look at all these celebrations and there is no one suitable date. So, we think it can be held at any time unless the government wants to push it until the end of the term.

“If GE16 is to be held earlier, there is no problem. We are always ready. We do not start preparing only when we are about to fight. We have to be prepared all the time,” he said. - September 17, 2026
