Miri Gospel Chapel donates RM84,000 for Nepal flood relief and recovery

MIRI, Sept 17: Miri Gospel Chapel has donated RM84,000 to support emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts for disaster victims in Nepal, following an appeal that saw church members coming forward to contribute according to their means.

Church chairman Elder Gordon Chew said the contribution reflected the church community’s concern for people in Nepal affected by the disaster.

Speaking at the Nepal disaster relief fund handover ceremony at Miri Gospel Chapel, Canada Hill, here today, he said the church felt compelled to turn its concern into action after learning about the scale of the destruction.

“We are not merely handing over a donation, but more importantly expressing our concern and care for the people of Nepal who are going through this major disaster.

“When we learned about the scale of the destruction, we felt that it was not enough to simply read the news, feel sad and then continue with our lives as usual. Concern needs to be translated into action,” he said as reported by TVS.

Chew said the funds would be channelled through Rural Development Service Centre (RDSC), a non-profit organisation in Nepal involved in relief efforts on the ground.

He said the contribution would support immediate relief needs, temporary assistance for affected families, as well as longer-term recovery and reconstruction efforts.

“We realise that RM84,000 cannot solve all the problems caused by a disaster of this magnitude. However, if this contribution can provide food for some families, safe shelter, clothing to help them through the winter, or help a family start their lives again, we believe it is still meaningful,” he said.

Chew also said it was encouraging to see other Christian communities taking action to support disaster victims in Nepal.

The floods that struck Nepal on Aug 26 caused widespread destruction in several areas, leaving affected communities in need of humanitarian assistance, including shelter, food, clean water, medical treatment and hygiene supplies. – DayakDaily
