On 1 June, a road accident in Kluang, Johor, claimed the lives of four family members after two siblings in luxury cars were reportedly driving recklessly.

We previously reported that a dashcam video of the incident went viral, showing a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz speeding along the road moments before the devastating crash involving several vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz driver pleads not guilty

The crash claimed the lives of five people, including the 22-year-old driver, who was driving a BMW 530e, and four members of the same family who were travelling in a Toyota Vios.

In a recent development, 19-year-old Goh Yi Zun has pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving recklessly and endangering other road users.

Yi Zun, who is also a university student in Singapore, entered his plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman at the Kluang Magistrate’s Court today (18 September), as reported by Kosmo!.

According to the charge, Yi Zun allegedly drove the Mercedes-Benz recklessly and dangerously at around 1:19 PM on 1 June, putting other road users at risk. The offence allegedly took place at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam.

The charge was brought under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000 upon conviction.

Accused seeks lower bail as he’s still studying

If convicted, the court is also required to endorse the conviction on the accused’s driving licence and disqualify him from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years from the date of conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azman initially offered RM20,000 bail, but defence lawyers Mohd Daud Ismail and Hang Li Yin asked for the amount to be reduced, citing that their client is still studying.

The court eventually set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station once a month.

The case has been fixed for mention on 20 November.
