'Outlander: Blood Of My Blood' Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Where Did Henry End Up?

I need to clarify that in my recap of the first season, I wrote that Henry and the baby travelled into the future together, but I was wrong, because now I know that the baby stayed with Julia, which is definitely the best case scenario here. Now, why Julia didn’t just touch the stone from where Henry did again, I don’t know. But, to be fair, no one knows if they’d make it back to the same timeline, so maybe this is for the best too. I don’t know how much longer they’re going to stay apart, but I’m starting to worry for poor Claire. Though, if you have seen Outlander, just tell me she’s reunited with her parents. Now, there’s a lot of fairy talk in this episode; whether it’s 1715 or 1924, those who believe, will believe, and in this case, it’s a housekeeper and Davina. Anyway, with that said, let’s jump straight into episode 1 of season 2 of Blood Of My Blood.

Episode 1 of season 2 opens with Henry and Julia trying to cross over, but not being able to do it together. Nothing happened, because they were seemingly on the wrong side of the stone. Then, some men show up to find Julia, and Henry pretends to be attacking her to make it seem still like he kidnapped her and the baby. However, the men come and beat him up while Julia hides with the baby behind the stone. Henry gets hit with a knife in his left shoulder, and before you know it, he hears the buzzing and Julia is all alone. She handles the situation well by telling the men that they should take her to Lovat, because it would make her seem less suspicious. But on the other hand, Henry wakes up wearing a straitjacket! He’s at the Inverness asylum. The doctor, pretending to be all nice, tells him that he was found gravely wounded and needed to be tended to immediately. But his stories make him seem like he’s insane. I mean, clearly, the man thinks he’s gone from 1715 to 1915, only he’s ended up in 1924 and is considered mad right now.

The doctor believes Henry was in the war and needs to erase those memories from his mind to become “sane” again, so he starts giving him electric shock therapy. Oh, and shocked he is because he gets more and more out of it the more he gets electrocuted. Of course, we know how this works. Now, Henry happens to get flashes of good memories in the middle of the wartime ones while being shocked, and during one of these episodes, he experiences a memory of Claire. Now, unfortunately, because of the shock therapy, Henry suddenly wipes the memory of Claire completely without a trace. The problem is also that nobody believed he had a wife even, so there was no way they would know about the child.

Suddenly, Henry can only remember the date October 20th (Claire’s birthday) and the letter C. He tries his very best every morning to try and remember what this memory of the letter C means, but he’s just unable to do so. When the reverend visits him to tell him about God, Henry tells him to write down a bunch of things, including the letter C, the date, and how the king believed his son was next in line. I suppose this is in reference to Lovat believing his son was next in line or something? This does make him sound more gone than ever before. I just wish he hadn’t said he needed help. How will he be normal again? He’s even in a wheelchair now, and always imagining that Julia is with him in his room.

At the same time, Ellen and Brian have to split up too, because the Mackenzie people show up for Ellen, and Brian wants to go fight immediately, but she stops him. Ellen decides to go herself, because she wants Brian to go fight the Jacobite fight as a soldier, not a prisoner. They’re still bound together, and they even tried to have a baby earlier because he was going to go off to war anyway.

She ends up getting slapped by her brother, Colum, who has quite frankly been getting on my nerves since the start. The man has no idea what he’s doing, just blaming his sister for everything. Yes, this is actually her fault, because Malcolm, her betrothed, is dead on the night they were meant to be wedded (killed by Brian, of course), but hey, she was desperate because of Colum. He doesn’t want to see her face, though I really don’t know what she’s going to do back at home. However, Malcolm’s sister, Maura, is very upset about her brother’s death and wants him to get a proper goodbye, which he’s not getting. Dougal sees this, and they talk about how they both kind of didn’t want this marriage, but he wants to be there for her, so he sits next to her, placing his hand on hers, which is very sweet. I think they’ll be very sweet. In the meantime, Brian makes it back home, and Julia tells Lovat that he should be the one showing Brian how to lead people into battle.

On the other hand, Julia makes it back home, and Davina receives her with surprise. It’s certainly interesting that she’s back, and with her son. Lovat has been drinking, and he gets very upset when he sees Julia, immediately asking her if Henry “laid a hand on her.” She deflects by saying that he didn’t, and because Lovat is drunk, she should make him some hangover tea. She really does not want to get with this man in bed again, and she manages to avoid it for now. She spends her time crying, only for Davina to see, of course. And while they’re talking, she talks about the stone circle. Davina immediately asks her if she’s a fairy, because it was strange that she had short hair, spoke about random things, and could read. Julia pacifies Davina by telling her that she’s actually from the future. Davina remembers the words Julia said to her the first time they met: “King George the V,” which was very weird at the time, but it all makes sense now. They then realise the seer, Maisri, will probably know about the stones and be able to help Julia.

At the end of episode 1, Henry has almost given up on himself, until the reverend’s housekeeper, Mrs. Graham, shows up to talk to him (and offer him some biscuits). She tells him that she believes him about him coming from another time, and the show ends with him asking her if she will help him. Well, of course she will, because if she doesn’t, I don’t know how much more of this I could watch. I don’t want to see anymore Henry torture, thank you very much. Nor any Julia torture, of course, but I do wish to see some Claire. I wonder how she’s doing as a teenager, and if Henry will ever be able to go back to her when she’s still a kid.
