'A Different World' 2026 Cast And Character Guide

Netflix’s A Different World is a newer Gen Z version of the classic old show by the same name. Of course, as a reboot, it only makes sense that old characters make a return to the series. But this isn’t just a show that’s been put out for nostalgia’s sake. It’s a beloved series that has been reprised for a new audience, one who might’ve heard about the original growing up from their parents. The show is a culturally relevant piece of history that is actually quite a perfect candidate to be brought back. Having watched the new one with no clear picture of the history, I still found it extremely entertaining, and want to see what the show has to offer in the future. This time, we follow the daughter of old characters Dwayne and Whitley, who is now ready for college herself. Of course, there are other characters whose kids are in Hillman again, but Deborah is definitely the protagonist here. With that said though, let’s jump straight into this cast and character guide for A Different World.

Maleah Joi Moon As Deborah

Maleah Joi Moon’s screen credits are limited, with only the film Mystic Christmas and an appearance on Disney Television Discovers: Talent Showcase to her name outside of A Different World, but she’s an incredibly accomplished actress on the stage. At just 24 years old, Moon has already won both a Tony and a Grammy, and now that she’s stepping into the world of television, it’s surely only a matter of time before she makes it big here too. Deborah is a delightful young woman who is different from her peers, because while she’s street smart and everyone knows she’s not stupid, there’s something stopping her from getting good grades. Hmm, wonder what that is? Deborah is an arts major, and though she has rich parents, and can seem kind of out of touch with the world, she’s actually nice and cares about people. Her ADHD diagnosis comes as no surprise, and at least she brings up the topic of neurodivergence with her family, which is hard enough. Deborah is the primary character of this show. Yes, she’s the protagonist, but I guess some of the other characters could be called that too. However, she’s what keeps the boat afloat. 

Cornell Young IV As Shaquille

Cornell Young IV’s first television appearance came just a year ago, in Forever, but he’s since been in Mind Your Business, Dream House, and D.O.P.E. Unit already. Shaquille for one is tremendously handsome with his big dreads. He’s also an all-star athlete, so of course he’s the major love interest, but like, who wouldn’t fall for that face. However, with such a face comes a lot of trouble too, and this guy is certainly trouble. Deborah is definitely obsessed with him, but she moves with caution, because Shaquille’s already broken her heart before the show even began. Also, he’s Ron’s son, and I guess if you know the old show, you might know he’s kind of a player (from what I saw of him here), so caution is advised for sure. 

Alijah Kai As Rashida

This isn’t the first acting role in which Alijah Kai’s played a student at an HBCU, having earlier appeared in Abducted At An HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie. She’s also been in the movies Runt, The Sound Of Christmas, and Can You Feel The Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story, as well as the TV shows Survivor’s Remorse and Everybody Hates Chris. There’s something incredibly likable about Rashida. She’s your typical single child with big dreams but suffering under the weight of great responsibilities. She’s excited to explore the world, but at the same time, what she’s “meant” to be doing is always holding her back from taking the leap. Rashida even falls for a dude named Kojo almost immediately after joining Hillman, but there too, she feels a sense of pressure because of her history, and she really just wants to live on her own terms. She’s very smart, and everyone, especially Brooks, loves her. Rashida doesn’t like Deborah to begin with, but she grows on her, and Rashida’s a sweetheart, so ultimately, we’re rooting for their friendship to last over all else. 

Chibuikem Uche As Kojo

Chibuikem Uche has been on a pretty hot streak recently, showing up in Paradise, The Rookie, and The Night Agent pretty close together, though none of them were recurring roles. He got his start with the show American Housewife, and has had a fairly long-running role on One Of Us Is Lying, also appearing in The Tomorrow War. Kojo is the resident British Black kid, who brings a gentleman’s flair to the series. He’s delightfully nice, and immediately wants to make friends with Rashida for obvious reasons. Kojo has a surprising amount of feminine energy to him (no, he’s not gay), and it’s really refreshing to see a character like him, who would usually be presented as an alpha male, do something like fashion merchandising and be proud of it. Yes, there’s things he’s embarrassed by, but he’s working on being vulnerable. 

Jordan Aaron Hall As Amir

Jordan Aaron Hall has had roles in the films Rustin and The Idea Of You, and the shows The Equalizer and Pose. Amir, unlike Kojo, is your resident gay boy. Love his septum piercing, and not just because it matches mine. He’s definitely got some stereotypical beats to him, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He does get into some trouble with his bestie, Hazel, but they do get over it. 

Kennedi Reece As Hazel

A Different World is Kennedi Reece’s very first credited role, but she is set to appear in Charged, another show set in an HBCU, though very different in tone. Hazel is the kind of girl who would say her dream is to be president one day. She wants to be the change, not see it, and she’ll do everything in her power to make that happen. She’s very cheery, a typical church girl, obsessed with all things Bible studies. That’s especially fun, because her best friend is a gay boy. Hazel is hiding a big secret, one that nobody except Amir knows, and it seems that secret is coming to bite her in the back next season. 

Kadeem Hardison As Dwayne

Kadeem Hardison got his big break, of course, with A Different World way back in 1987. He’s gone on to have a bunch of roles after that, in films like White Men Can’t Jump, Renaissance Man, Drive (Not the Ryan Gosling one; this one came out in 1997), and Paddleton. He’s also recently shown up in shows like Euphoria, Lincoln Lawyer, and Moonhaven. Dwayne is Deborah’s dad, and also interim president of Hillman. He’s got other things on his mind too, though; Whitley and he have been separated in a way when the series begins. If you’ve watched the old show, I would love to know if he’s still the same as he was, or if age has changed him in any way. He’s got a charming personality, and clearly he’s good with administration, so he should ideally be the permanent president, but his arch nemesis won’t allow it if it’s up to him. 

Jasmine Guy As Whitley

Like Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy got big with A Different World, and she even wrote three episodes and directed one while working on the show. Her earliest big film role was in Spike Lee’s School Daze, back in 1988, and she’s also appeared in Harlem Nights, Stompin’ At The Savoy, and Guinevere. She guest-starred on an episode of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air back in the day, and has had roles on Touched By An Angel, Ladies Man, The Vampire Diaries, and Grey’s Anatomy, among many others. Whitley is Deborah’s mum, and a very proud rich woman. If her daughter is out of touch with the world, Whitley is out of touch with the galaxy. She’s not a bad person by any means, but she’s happy to pay people to get anything she wants; I mean, that is the point of money and power, isn’t it? 

Vincent Jamal Hooper As Ellington

Vincent Jamal Hooper’s had limited screen roles, but he’s had quite the career in theater, appearing in Hamilton alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, and playing Simba in a Broadway staging of The Lion King back in the 90s. In television, he’s appeared in Shots Fired, Chicago Med, and The Broadway Show With Tamsen Fadal. Ellington is love interest number two for Deborah. He starts off as her tutor, and it seems the only thing I know about him is that he’s a loyal friend to Candace. I don’t know how I feel about him and Deborah, because though I liked him initially, after some time, I feel like I’m rooting for Shaquille more. 

Cree Summer As Freddie Brooks

Although her appearance on A Different World put Cree Summer in the spotlight as an actor, she’d already made a start as a talented voice actor, and she’s continued to do some of her best work in that line. She’s voiced characters in shows like Batman Beyond, SpongeBob SquarePants, Teen Titans Go!, and Rugrats. Freddie, as Rashida points out, is too smart for us because of how much turquoise she wears. Jokes aside, though, she’s a great teacher who everyone loves and is a little bit scared of. She’s like that English teacher at school, the one that everyone vibes with and likes. Freddie seems almost too perfect to be human before we see her interact with her brother and, more importantly, Ron. 

Darryl M. Bell As Ron 

Like Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell’s big roles starting out were in A Different World and School Daze. He’s had a relatively quiet career since, but he did appear in the films Mr. Write, Brother, and The Dark Party, as well as the shows Black Scorpion, Homeboys In Outer Space, and For Your Love. You might recognize him from when he showed up on Househusbands of Hollywood if you were really into reality TV in the late 2000s. Ron is Shaquille’s dadager, i.e. manager plus dad. Wait, that should be the other way around. Ron is supportive, but also doesn’t seem to understand his son very well, so he gets fired for a brief moment in the middle of the show before his son takes him back as his manager. He’s clearly a ladies’ man, and gives Shaquille the wrong advice, possibly more than once, so I guess he’s kind of here for comic relief.
