Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Recap And Ending Explained: What Happened To D And Talia?

Following a prolonged hiatus of four years, Netflix’s iconic sci-fi masterclass anime, “CyberPunk: Edgerunners,” has returned with its second season, bringing a new story with a new set of characters, while juggling with the heady themes of identity, trauma, corporate ownership, and vengeance. Compared to the much-acclaimed first chapter of the anime, the sophomore season at times feels darker, but unlike its preceding instalment, ends on a much hopeful note.

The Origin of Capri: How it Ties in With First Season

Before highlighting any details regarding the character arcs and stakes involved, a brief discussion about the origin of the mysterious, extremely powerful personality construct, Capri, is needed–both to understand what this season is all about, and how it connects with the previous chapter. Arasaka’s Soulkiller tech, which is used to digitize consciousness, the personality of human subjects, briefly came into focus in the first season, and in this iteration, this experimental tech has evolved into something far more nefarious. Under the leadership of Arasaka scientist, Kyoko, Project Capricorn led to the creation of Capri, an amalgamation of multiple different personalities and engrams, identified as a composite female personality. Capri was designed to turn human subjects into unstoppable killing machines, capable of bypassing any tech restraints and manipulating them at will. While Arasaka wanted to use Capri to aggravate the cycle of gang violence which ultimately profits the megacorp, they knew Capri was too dangerous to be left unshackled, and Kyoko designed a datashard which could only be accessed to awaken her through a human host. However, none of the human test subjects who were experimented upon for compatibility with Capri survived more than two days. A number of potential candidates who have high tolerance for cyberware implants were enlisted by Arasaka, which included David Martinez – the beloved tragic hero from the first season, and dual protagonists of this season – D and Talia. One of Arasaka’s rival companies, Kang Tao, is after the revolutionary tech as well.

How Do D And Talia’s Stories Entangle?

The second season opens with a renowned Edgerunner, King, and his crew attempting to steal the datashard from an Arasaka facility as part of their assignment, not knowing what it contains. During the mission, King goes through a bout of cyberpsychosis while seeing a vision of his former lover, Avida, which results in the mission’s failure, the deaths of a couple of his team members, and MaxTac enforcers bringing him down. Thanks to King’s pricey medical policy, he is spared from death as Trauma Team’s rapid action team save him, but his cyberware implants are stripped away to prevent future crisis, and his team abandon him out of disdain for sabotaging their last mission. Disgraced and depressed, King tries to take his own life, but stops after seeing Avida approaching him, for real this time. She needs him to help her with taking care of her wayward daughter, Talia, who has given in to addiction of implants and joined the group of crazy delinquents known as Maelstrom. To convince King to help her, Avida mentions that Talia is his child. It is eventually revealed that Talia’s diagnosis with a neural degenerative disease has caused her to become self destructive, but that’s not the whole reason. Avida’s husband, Kiril, is a Kang Tao employee, who has been encouraging his daughter’s affinity for implants to use her as a test subject for the megacorpos’ experimentation, which is the prime reason behind her present predicament. Kyoko, obsessed with Capri, uses King’s botched heist as an opportunity to kill a group of Arasaka employees and keep the datashard with himself

The narrative focus shifts to a young cinephile street videographer, Roman, who acts as a common link between two protagonists, is the moral compass of the narrative, and is overall a pretty fascinating character who feels like the odd one out in this twisted, corrupt world. Roman has these ‘old school’ ideals about filmmaking, capturing the authenticity of the lives of people through video to show the truth, as opposed to Braindance simulations which he feels to be cheap knockoffs. A good number of unique action sequences are shown through Roman’s analog camera footage, which heightens the visual quality of the series as a whole. Roman accidentally records the footage of King’s heist, and later decides to visit one of Maelstrom’s hangouts, where he records Talia upon getting fascinated by her acrobatics skills. Talia too is intrigued upon seeing someone without cybernetic augmentations. However, the Maelstrom gang members decide to subject Roman to vicious hazing by threatening to forcibly implant cyberware in his body.

D, a lonesome, battle-hardened netrunner, who was investigating Maelstrom on his own, rescues Roman and takes him to safety. It turns out, D, whose real name is later revealed to be David, belongs to the Snake Clan, which was exterminated in a brutal massacre. Ever since losing his people, D has suffered from survivor’s guilt, and wants to take revenge against those responsible for the tragedy. As D begins to follow a trail of clues to uncover the identity of the perps, Roman decides to tag along with him and records his journey. At one point, Roman and D join hands to steal Arasaka tech, and obtain the datashard. At the Arasaka facility, D beats up a crooked hotshot, Kitano, and the duo come across shocking intel about the megacorp’s secret list of potential candidates as well, and Roman is shocked to find Talia’s name on the list.

Capri connects with D and lets him become an extremely powerful tech manipulator. On the other hand, King’s persistent efforts to bring Talia back to her old life find moderate success, as even though she eventually leaves Maelstrom, she begins to show early signs of cyberpsychosis. Talia continues to share a strong bond with Roman,  as she feels he is the only person in her life who wants to know who she really is. On one occasion, while going out with King, Talia invites Roman to accompany them, and as the four meet, Capri takes this opportunity to jump into Talia’s system to use her as a more suitable host. Even though Roman is able to take the datashard back, the ‘soul’ portion of Capri remains latched onto Talia, while the soulless, apathetic vestige remains in the datashard, with which D later connects.

D’s Vengeful Quest And Avida’s Fate

D grows frustrated upon being unable to connect with the soulless husk of Capri, and he has also learned that the true mastermind of the massacre of his clan, Tanaka, the Arasaka head-honcho, was killed by David Martinez and his crew (first season). Confused about where to direct his pent-up anger and agony, D grows jaded and cruel as he takes Roman’s help to build up anti-Arasaka sentiment across Night City by going after employees of the megacorp. Kitano tries to take revenge against D for past humiliation, only to get burned to death at his hands. D’s vengeful quest attracts other rebellious minds, and Yupi, a rich young girl who lost her father to Arasaka’s machinations, is one of them. While Roman tries to keep D on a morally conscious path, Yupi’s encouragement, along with that of the other like-minded, violent, impressionable rebels, pushes D further towards a self-destructive course. Omi, one of D’s old friends from the Snake Nation clan, meets with him and tries to bring him back to the path of righteousness, but to no avail.

It should be mentioned that Talia’s condition has aggravated since linking with Capri, and Megusha, one of King’s associate netrunners, suggests King search for Kang Tao’s own version of Soulkiller tech to save her by finding a new host body to transfer her consciousness into. As King reveals this to Avida, she hacks into Kang Tao’s system to find details about their version of Soulkiller, using Kiril’s access to the system. However, Kiril becomes aware of Avida’s actions.

Kyoko, posing as an innocent tech enthusiast, fools Roman to make him arrange a visit with D to get Capri back, however, as she inadvertently exposes her identity by mentioning Arasaka’s candidate list, D almost kills her. This incident widens the rift between D and Roman, and they part ways. In the meantime, Capri’s soul heals Talia, befriends her, and reveals that Talia can be her best self if she can reunite Capri with her other half, which is still connected with D. Talia goes on a movie date with Roman, and Capri’s soul proposes she use Roman to get to D. An Arasaka top brass reveals the reason behind the Snake Nation clan’s extermination–Arasaka wanted to bring in D, but the mission, which should have been covert in nature, was botched by Maelstrom enforcers, who torched the entire community instead. D blames himself from his community’s fate, and in a rage, murders the exec despite offering her protection previously.

Kyoko joins hands with Kiril and Kang Tao, as she enables a failsafe switch to render D ineffective by turning the datashard off, and an ambush by Kang Tao enforcers results in Yupi’s death. Retrieving the datashard, Kang Tao enforcers leave a battered D to die, and Kyoko realizes the soul half of Capri was not connected with D. Eventually, he and Kiril learn about Talia’s connection with the soul self of Capri, and have her abducted. King and Avida try their best to steal Kang Tao’s Soulkiller tech for Talia, but Kiril orders a direct assault on them, which results in Avida’s demise. As King is captured, he reveals Kiril’s actions to Talia, enraging her as she wants exact revenge on her father. Later, Kiril beats up King, and reveals Avida only used him in her mission to save Talia’s life, as Kiril is her biological father. The volume of sheer irony that Talia’s own father is trying to have her used as a lab rat, while the person who believed himself to be her father, is trying desperately to save her still.

What Happened to D And Talia in the End?

Omi rescues D, and brings him to her apartment to nurse him back to health. Feeling guilty and inadequate over how his violent actions aimed at revenge ultimately didn’t amount to anything, D shares his regret with Omi, who is revealed to still have faith in him. Kyoko uses the datashard on Talia, allowing Capri’s soul to merge with her other half. Knowing Capri might overwrite her personality and completely take over, Talia’s consciousness makes a final request to make those who wronged her mother pay. Capri takes over Talia’s body, and launches a vicious attack on Kiril, and the chase instantly becomes a hot topic, with Kiril’s access to global tech.

D decides to bring Capri back to save Talia to make amends for his actions, and Omi accompanies him in his mission, along with Roman, as D reconciles with his old friend. As the situation gets out of hand, and Kang Tao high command order an air strike to neutralize Capri, Kyoko decides to join hands with D and his team, and somehow manages to thwart the airstrike by launching an EMP blast. The fallout of the conflict results in Kiril’s death, and Kyoko gets fatally injured. Approaching a Capri-controlled Talia, D is able to comforting the personality construct by showing kindness and warmth, and letting her be whole again by connecting Capri to his system. A dying Kyoko warns D that  Kang the Tao chapter isn’t over, and now that bigger corps like Arasaka and Militech know about Capri, they will come after her. Determined to carry on the battle against megacorps, D reveals he is prepared for what comes next. D decides to part ways with Roman, who is dismayed upon realizing that he is going on a suicide mission against megacorps. D refers to the heroics of David Martinez, who gave up his life for his friends, something D also wants to do to make amends for his past. It is hinted that Capri and D perish in the all-out conflict against the combined forces of Militech and Arasaka.

Talia gradually recovers, but her neural degeneration remains, now that she is no longer connected with Capri. However, instead of breaking down and remaining hurt over her situation, Talia has decided to turn a new page with King, her adoptive father, by her side. As she parts ways with Roman, he breaks down, believing she will leave him too, just like D did. However, Talia appears confident that they will meet in the future, and their farewell concludes on a bright note. Ultimately, storytellers like Roman will carry on the stories of D and Talia, who didn’t let the system condition their existence and chose to rise above them, the second season ends with Roman’s optimism towering over the pessimistic degeneration of Night City, letting viewers hope for a better future in the bleak, twisted world.
