Grill, chill and bond: MBKS to host Kenyalang Park BBQ evening this weekend

KUCHING, Oct 29: Good food, music and new friendships are on the menu this Saturday (Oct 31) as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) fires up a community BBQ evening at the Traffic Garden, Kenyalang Park, from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.

The event, themed “Bringing Residents Together”, will feature food, singing, music and clown performances, with the public welcome to attend. Food will include finger food, with some contributions sponsored, as the event is intended for residents to drop by after dinner.

This is organised following feedback from residents of Kenyalang Park and Bintawa calling for more community activities at their neighbourhood parks.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council received almost 600 feedback forms from the two neighbourhoods, including more than 300 from Kenyalang Park, with residents suggesting more activities at the park.

The event is expected to draw between 500 and 800 people at the Traffic Garden, Kenyalang Park.

“We analyse the feedback and look at the suggestions and proposals put forward. One of them was to have more events at Kenyalang Park,” he said at a press conference today.

Wee said MBKS hoped the gathering would encourage residents to build stronger relationships beyond brief greetings at the market or within their respective neighbourhoods.

He added that the council would initially help organise community activities before encouraging residents themselves to take greater ownership of future programmes.

Wee said stronger neighbourhood ties could encourage residents to look out for one another, particularly elderly people living alone, children and families facing difficulties.

He also encouraged families to bring their parents and grandparents, saying the gathering would support the council’s efforts to keep senior citizens active and involved in community life.

The event also aligns with the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, which seeks to create a community where children feel welcome, safe and included, including through greater access to community activities and public spaces.

Residents will also be able to raise neighbourhood concerns and share suggestions directly with Wee, the deputy mayor, councillors and council officers attending the event.

“Your feedback helps us plan programmes and improvements that are useful to the people living here,” he said.

Residents from across Kuching are welcome to attend the BBQ evening at the Traffic Garden, Kenyalang Park, from 6.30pm on Oct 31. Food redemption tickets will be available while stocks last. —DayakDaily
