Selangor Sultan urges scholars to speak truth, leaders to respect constructive criticism

HIS Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has called on religious scholars and leaders to strengthen one another despite their different roles, stressing that mutual respect must not come at the expense of honest advice and constructive criticism.

The Selangot Ruler said rulers had a responsibility to provide protection and support for institutions, while religious scholars must have the courage to offer truthful counsel without being influenced by interests that undermine the integrity of knowledge.

“In this context, I believe that ulama (religious scholars) and umara (leaders) have different roles, but they strengthen one another.

“A good relationship is not one that closes the space for criticism, but one that preserves proper conduct, respects jurisdictions and prioritises the interests of the ummah (Muslim community),” the Sultan said.

He was speaking at the Multaqa Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj: Legacy of the Selangor Sultanate in Empowering Islam in the Malay World.

The Sultan said the Selangor Sultanate’s legacy in advancing Islam rested on three main pillars: continuity of governance and efforts to uphold Islam; comprehensive and integrated education; and institutions that translated Islamic law into policies, fatwas and public services.

He said these pillars must be strengthened wisely through approaches suited to the demands of the times.

“As the custodian of the legacy of previous Selangor Sultans, I will ensure it continues to be preserved, with attention given to strengthening the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah, the credibility of fatwas, Islamic administration, education and the advancement of knowledge,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin also cautioned scholars against being easily swayed by fragments of information without verification or consultation with authoritative sources.

“Do not rely merely on snippets of information from short videos, which may not be authentic or complete. Instead, refer to authoritative sources and seek guidance from recognised scholars,” he said.

He urged the people to preserve unity, respect institutions entrusted with managing Islamic affairs, examine history honestly, discuss differences respectfully and put forward proposals grounded in reality.

Earlier, the Sultan launched three publications and initiatives at the event: Sheikhul Islam and Muftis of Selangor (1930–2021), Compilation of Fatwa Articles 2001–2005 (Volume 1) and the e-Fatwa system. - October 29, 2026
