The PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia 2026 has caused highway congestion that extends into the access corridors to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as 200,000 sports fans arrive alongside regular weekend airline passengers.
The main arteries of Jalan Pekeliling and the ELITE highway serve as the singular entry point for both the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and KLIA terminals.
Organisers confirmed expected attendance of 200,000 spectators over the three-day race schedule, translating to 60,000 to 80,000 people daily on Saturday and Sunday.
Airline operators maintain a firm 60-minute pre-flight gate closure policy, creating potential missed flight liabilities for commuters trapped in sport-related road delays.
The carrier Batik Air instructed international travellers to arrive four hours before departure to account for Sepang circuit congestion.
At the same time, the national carrier Malaysia Airlines instituted a three-hour early-arrival mandate for international departures and a two-hour buffer for domestic routes.
Parking Wallet CompressionOfficial on-site valet parking costs RM170 a day, while premier bays cost RM100.
Basic slots cost RM20 a day but are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so drivers circle for spaces and add to traffic.
Two-wheeled vehicles also face fees, with premier motorcycle bays priced at RM31.80 a day.
The KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit rail lines run on dedicated tracks, so gridlock on the surrounding expressways doesn’t affect them.
To help travellers, Rapid KL operates express shuttle buses linking KLIA Terminal 2, Pasar Seni and KLCC directly to the racetrack gates.
Forecasts also point to afternoon thunderstorms during the main race windows, which could increase demand for road transit.
