'Outlander: Blood Of My Blood' Season 2 Episode 7 Recap & Ending Explained

The seventh episode of Outlander: Blood Of My Blood, has us realizing a very trivial truth about the original series that makes the show so scrumptious because of its many twists and turns. This is not to say that I am not upset about the resulting twist on Julia’s behalf. No, this is the worst news ever, but now I am also desperate to watch the OG show and get more information on Claire’s future and upbringing. Anyway, the series has been exciting so far, but this episode gave us both the most hope and the least of it throughout the prequel so far. The show still has 3 episodes left this season, which has me wondering why we found out such an important thing so early on in the show. I mean, surely all we’re going to want now is for Julia to try her best to travel back, but instead, we’re going to get heartbreak after heartbreak, I fear. But anyway, I don’t want to think about that any longer, so instead, let’s jump into episode 7.

Spoiler Alert

What Happens When Dougal Returns?

Episode 7 opens with Brian, Dougal, and Murtagh returning to Leoch, where the women are busy sewing a burial shroud. Colum is infuriated by the sight of his brother rather than feeling relieved he’s returned. I understand that many men did end up dying in this war, and that what he did was a bit stupid, but Colum just seems so bitter to me always. I know what he’s gone through; I get it. But the way he stole everything from Ellen and doesn’t know how to handle his position makes me so frustrated. Dougal and Maura now have to stay a little ways away from the castle in case the British come to find him. In the meantime, Brian gets to visit Ellen, as she cries her eyes out and tells him that she’s lost their daughter. Of course, she’s not sure the baby was a daughter for sure, but she certainly felt like it was, and this has just taken the soul out of her. She tells Brian that he can leave her now that she’s of “no use” to him really. But she also lets it slip, or rather just tells the guy that his father poisoned her so that she won’t be able to have children. The way Brian storms out of the room after telling her that he loves her is the work of legend. But her sister stops her from following suit to stop Brian, knowing too well that not even wolves from hell could hold him back.

In the meantime, Murtagh gets some alone time with Grace and proclaims his love for her, presenting her with the white rose still on his wrist. She’s hesitant about them at first, but he knows only too well that they don’t have a lifetime together, but they can spend the time that they do have in each other’s arms, if they want to. He explains this to her through some romantic words, and she’s immediately down for it because, let’s face it, they both want each other. She tells him when she’ll be alone next, and how he can get there so that they can enjoy each other’s company. How cute and romantic, eh? But they’re not the only two enjoying a romantic getaway. Maura and Dougal seem to be going at it as if it’s a task and not something they should be doing for merriment. But Maura’s had enough, and she shows Dougal that she can be romantic too, trying to take his mind off things and bringing him closer to her. Guess those children are coming real soon, eh?

What Does Brian Do To Lovat?

Brian returns home and smashes Balloch’s face onto the dining table to grab his father’s attention. He is diabolical and asks his father how he could ruin his own bloodline like this. Lovat tells him about the prophecy about little Simon having to be Lovat’s last heir in order for the boy to grow up to become King. Brian grabs Lovat by the neck because Lovat’s so certain that Brian will not kill him. Brian then holds a knife to a rather sensitive part of Lovat’s body that he finds very important, of course, later dragging the knife up to his neck. You think now’s his chance, but that’s when Julia and Brian’s mother arrive, telling him to hold back and not kill his dad, because he’d be hanged for murder. Brian cannot leave Ellen behind, especially not in the state that she is. So instead, he returns to her, letting a disappointed Colum know that Lovat is still alive and well. Colum is only bothered by the fact that Ellen has no worth now (ugh, I hate this man more and more every day).

Why Do We See Henry And Julia’s Past?

In a flashback right after Henry and Julia’s wedding, they are enjoying a lovely movie in the cinema, and kissing and causing a disruption for the old man sitting behind them because they’re so in love. But the lovey-dovey time is interrupted when Charlotte, Henry’s ex, shows up, calling him “H,” as if it’s such a unique nickname. She’s clearly unhappy that he’s married a different lass, and she is desperate to let it be known. But Julia’s not one to take things quietly. She knows exactly how to talk back to people like Charlotte, and reminds her that she has something far more precious than “Lottie” could ever imagine: Henry’s heart. But later, while the couple is sipping coffee together, Henry admits Lottie was his first love, but he also promises Julia that she’ll be his last. Additionally, we find out that he had broken up with her even before the war, so there’s nothing for Julia to be worried about. When it comes to the ring that Charlotte called cheap, Julia gives Henry a profound speech about how the stone might be common, but it’s a common stone of myth and magic. She reminds him that it has all their love in it. After all, it did help her travel to the past with Henry, even if it did split them up.

Now, in the past (but present day for the two of them), Henry uses Margaret Grant’s missing necklace as an excuse to go to find amethyst with Arch. Oh, also, her brother, Grant, has been invited to see the King of England. How grand, and so has Simon Fraser (since he switched sides out of the blue and all that). Margaret is under the impression that the investiture ceremony that Malcolm got an invitation to is because she was going around “hobnobbing” with the crème de la crème of London.

What Does Julia Learn About Herself?

In the meantime, while Arch is skeptical about the Fairy Folk and their stones (the amethyst in this case), his wife hopes that if he brings some stones back himself, that might help them bear a child (ouch). She is desperate for one, clearly, so Arch will do anything to make her happy, even if he doesn’t believe it will work. He also shares a tender moment with Henry after he discloses the baby thing to Henry. They get to the hills that look like two faces, almost as if living a prophecy, and Henry goes down on a rope that ends up snapping. Luckily, he’s fine, and he finds the stone and gets his gemstones for Julia. Now, Julia and Henry have been writing to each other, as they promised, and they’re meant to meet soon after he’s found the gems. He decides to take them to her that day, and she’s delighted by the thought of going back to their baby, Claire, and forgetting about this awful chapter of their lives. But they can’t go immediately, because Balloch’s around. They must wait till the investiture. Julia returns to little William, delighted, before noticing Maisri is in their kitchen yet again. She can’t believe the psychic is back in her house after what she did to Ellen. But the most shocking reveal comes right then.

At the end of episode 7, Julia tells Maisri that she doesn’t believe anything she says, because her son will never be king. But Maisri finally reveals to her that she is not a traveller, unlike her son and husband. The only reason Julia was able to travel was because she was carrying William in her belly, which allowed her a proxy ticket apparently. This means even the gemstones can’t take her back to where she came from, which means she’ll never be able to see Claire. But this is not what Maisri says. She simply tells her that she’s not a traveller, but Claire is, so maybe this might be something it is possible for her to see her daughter again, or at the very least, we can hope it is for her sake.
