The Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) is urging for the sale of e-cigarettes or vape devices to be banned or at least temporarily suspended so the issue can be looked into more thoroughly.
Berita Harian reported that MCPF Senior Vice Chairman, Datuk Seri Ayub Yaakob, said this is to allow for studies on better mechanisms and policies to regulate it effectively.
“It could lead to unhealthy behaviours like stealing and rape”
Ayub explained that addiction to intoxicating substances like this doesn’t just affect brain development but can also lead to unhealthy behaviours like stealing and even rape.
He also mentioned that while vape liquids might not have drug-like effects on the body, using flavoured liquids like ‘magic mushroom’ can cause hallucinations, make users feel high, and lead to other negative effects.
“Malaysia should follow Singapore’s example”
Commenting further, Ayub said Malaysia should follow Singapore’s example of completely banning the use and sale of vapes.
He pointed out that under the republic’s law, anyone caught owning, buying, or using e-cigarettes and related components can be fined up to S$2,000 (around RM7,000) for each offence.
He also explained that it’s also an offence to sell, possess with the intention to sell, import, or distribute e-cigarettes and their components.
The government is sticking to its decision not to ban vape
Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the government is sticking to its decision not to ban vape sales at the national level, leaving it up to state local authorities (PBT) to set their own policies.
Meanwhile, the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, called for a total ban on vapes to prevent greater harm to society, especially among teens and schoolchildren.
