Woman Fakes Husband's Death To Avoid Paying Bank Loan, Both Arrested By Police
By Dhiviya
In a shocking case of fraud, a woman in Indonesia went to extreme lengths to avoid repaying a significant bank loan. The woman, identified as Indah Suryaningsih, 38, falsified her husband's death, complete with fake evidence, in an attempt to escape her financial obligations.
Jember Police Chief AKBP Bayu Pratama Gubunangi revealed that Suryaningsih reported her husband, Rakhmad Habibi, 40, as deceased to Bank Jatim in November 2024. She submitted photographic evidence purportedly showing her husbands grave and tombstone to support her claim.
"Suryaningsih, a resident of Sumbersari, informed the bank that her husband had passed away and even provided what seemed to be convincing evidence," Gubunangi explained during a press briefing on Friday.
However, the bank found inconsistencies in the death report, prompting an investigation. Bank officials discovered that the documents submitted by Suryaningsih were fake, raising serious questions about her intentions.
Further investigations uncovered that Suryaningsih had orchestrated the scheme to avoid repaying a bank loan of 750 million rupiah (approximately RM206,224).
Following the discovery, a police report was filed, and both Suryaningsih and her husband were apprehended by Jember police. Authorities have confirmed that the couple will face legal action for their actions.
"They will be prosecuted and could face a maximum sentence of six years in prison," Gubunangi stated.
