Instagram 'Edits' coming to Android in February as CapCut remains banned

In the wake of TikTok’s (brief) shutdown over the weekend, Instagram lead Adam Mosseri announced a new “Edits” app coming soon which could serve as an alternative to CapCut on iOS and Android, another ByteDance app that remains banned.

Instagram “Edits” is a new video editing app that’s set to launch next month. The app, Mosseri explains, will allow creators to edit videos from their phone with more advanced tools, as well as getting better insights on a video’s performance on Instagram, should the edited video be posted there. The app also allows creators to save drafts and share them with others, Mosseri said in a video shared to Threads.

“Edits” is already available for pre-order for iOS on the Apple App Store, but Mosseri implies that the Android launch will be around the same time, saying that “Android [is] coming soon” after revealing the iOS pre-order status, adding that “it’s not going to launch until February.” In context, it’s hard to tell for sure if “Edits” will be coming to Android in February, but that seems likely.

This comes as CapCut, a similar video editing app that was developed by ByteDance as a companion to TikTok, remains banned for US users. TikTok resumed its service less than 24 hours after shutting down, but other apps from ByteDance’s catalog including CapCut and Marvel Snap remain banned in the country, and unavailable for download from the Play Store.
