Han Chong on Self-Portrait's SS25 collection

When you think of luxury fashion, you may think of Parisian ateliers or Italian craftsmanship but Malaysia’s contributions are just as impactful. From Jimmy Choo’s coveted high heels to Zhong Lin’s evocative photography and Ridzman Zidaine’s commanding presence on the runway, the country’s influence in the industry spans far and wide. Adding to this legacy is Han Chong, the visionary behind Self-Portrait.

Born and raised in Penang, Han has built a brand synonymous with a bold, contemporary take on elegance, earning a reputation as one of the go-to designers in recent years. His star-studded clientele includes the likes of Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Gemma Chan and Blackpink’s Jisoo. At the same time, the London-based brand has expanded its footprint across Asia, with boutiques opening in cities such as Bangkok, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai.

Earlier this month, we were treated to an exclusive preview of the SS25 collection at Club 21 in The Gardens Mall, joined by Kuala Lumpur’s fashion elite, including Christinna Kuan, Nia Atasha, Jestinna Kuan, Azira Shafinaz, Alicia Amin, Ezurin Khyra, and more. Another highlight of the event was the Self-Portrait Residency by Christopher Kane, a collaboration that pushed the brand’s creative boundaries even further.

Ahead of the preview, we sat down with Han Chong to uncover the inspiration behind the SS25 collection, his favourite pieces, and, of course, the dish he craves when he’s back home.

What inspired the collection?

The energy in the industry is shifting, and so is the way people dress—comfort has become a priority. That’s why I designed the collection with the focus on what women truly need in their lives. Self-Portrait is a brand that celebrates women, so it’s important to create pieces that make them feel truly special. Many of the silhouettes are streamlined, with a strong emphasis on fabric development. I want these pieces to elevate not only their style but also their mood.

Were there any specific places or experiences that influenced the collection?

When designing the collection, I always keep the Asian weather in mind. The hot weather plays a big role in my fabric choices—thick materials just aren’t practical here. It’s important to select fabrics that are versatile for both everyday wear and holidays.  A big part of the collection is inspired by the summer destinations and the outfits women need for their holiday activities. I want to make sure these pieces meet those specific needs.

What design elements did you focus on to make this collection uniquely Self-Portrait?

My focus is on looser, more relaxed silhouettes, paired with fabrics that feel great and have a little bit of sexiness!

Which piece best captures the essence of the season, and what makes it so special?

I like skorts—those shorts that look like skirts. They’re short but still classy, and they really make the legs look longer. Plus, they’re fun and flirty without being too much.

What do you do to clear the mind or to relax?

I like to cook to relax. When I’m done with my work, I usually prepare a Malaysian dish I picked up on YouTube during COVID-19. It’s very therapeutic and helps clear my mind.

What is the first thing you want to eat when you come back to Malaysia?

Nasi Kandar! I always have it when I’m in Penang, and since my sister loves it too, she often takes me to those Michelin Guide restaurants.
