KUCHING, Feb 21: Sarawak is spearheading cutting-edge transport initiatives, integrating smart traffic lights, Transit Signal Priority (TSP), Bus Signal Priority (BSP), and AI-driven systems to enhance urban mobility, making it more efficient, reliable, and sustainable.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin highlighted that these advancements are transforming traffic and public transport management across Sarawak. “In our cities and towns, smart traffic lights dynamically adjust to real-time traffic conditions, reducing congestion.
“TSP and BSP will give priority to public transport at intersections, minimising delays and improving service efficiency. AI technology further optimises transport management by analysing traffic patterns and predicting demand, enabling better planning and mobility solutions,” he said when officiating the Borneo Innovation and Technology Conference (BIT25) at a hotel here today.
These innovations, he added, underscore Sarawak’s commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transport system that benefits the people while aligning with the region’s vision for a smarter, greener future.
“This is in addition to the Kuching Urban Transformation System (KUTS) project, which will deploy advanced solutions through zero-emission Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) vehicles and green hydrogen-powered feeder buses.
“Sarawak is not just upgrading its transport network, it is pioneering a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable future,” he said.
Recognizing these efforts, the World Brands Foundation awarded Sarawak Metro—the government-linked company implementing KUTS—the Most Innovative Brand Award in the Public Transport Solutions category in 2023.
With Sarawak on a transformative journey towards a high income, technology-driven economy under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Lee emphasised that platforms like BIT25 play a crucial role in driving innovation.
He pointed out that one of the biggest challenges for businesses in digital transformation is ensuring that the workforce is future-ready.
“This initiative makes it easier for businesses to invest in their employees, equipping them with the right knowledge, skills and networks needed for growth,” he said.
As technology reshapes industries worldwide, Lee stressed the importance of ensuring Sarawak’s human resources are well-equipped with digital solutions to stay competitive.
“Our digital transformation journey is not just about business, it is about creating a more connected, efficient and sustainable Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
