Jumio Survey Reveals Crumbling Consumer Trust In Digital Life Amid Surge In AI-Powered Fraud And Deepfakes

A new global study reveals that trust in digital spaces is eroding, with consumers increasingly worried about the impact of AI-driven fraud, deepfakes, and manipulated content. The 2025 Jumio Online Identity Study, based on input from more than 8,000 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, and Mexico, highlights a widespread loss of confidence in digital authenticity.

The survey found that 69% of respondents believe AI-powered fraud now poses a greater threat to personal security than traditional identity theft. In Singapore, this figure rose to 74%, while 71% said such scams are harder to detect than older forms of fraud.

Digital Trust Falters As AI Concerns Rise

The study also found high levels of concern about various forms of AI-powered fraud:

While consumers are aware of these growing risks, many feel unprepared to distinguish what is real from what is fraudulent online.

Who Should Be Responsible?

Despite placing the most trust in themselves (93%), many consumers say the responsibility for stopping AI-driven fraud lies with Big Tech. Only 18% believe individuals should be primarily accountable, compared to 43% who pointed to large technology companies.

The research also outlines how AI tools are being used to industrialise online fraud, with plug-and-play kits enabling even inexperienced individuals to deploy sophisticated scams involving synthetic identities and account takeovers.

Rising Demand For Stricter Verification

Amid rising uncertainty, most consumers appear willing to spend more time verifying their identities online, especially in sensitive sectors like finance (80%), government services (78%), and healthcare (76%).

The findings suggest that consumers want both stronger safeguards and more transparent digital practices. As threats evolve, so too must the tools and strategies that underpin online security.
