Malaysia May Require Labels On AI Content By End Of 2025

Malaysia is considering making it mandatory to label AI-generated content. The rule would fall under the Online Safety Act 2024 which is expected to take effect by the end of the year.

The goal is to stop people from using AI to scam, impersonate or defame others especially on social media where deepfakes and synthetic audio are already a problem.

Some platforms are already tagging AI-generated posts but the government thinks it is time to move beyond optional efforts. Mandatory labels would make it clear when content is machine-made and could help reduce confusion and misuse.

There is also interest in working with other ASEAN countries to expand the effort. Regionally coordinated policies could make it harder for bad actors to shift between platforms or countries to dodge the rules.

At the global level discussions are still ongoing. The United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union are both debating who should be in charge of AI regulation. For now Malaysia is focused on taking charge at home.

The Communications Ministry says this is not just about tech policy. Every ministry will need to assess how AI is used within their own areas.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Fahmi said that AI will not replace human roles. Instead, young people, especially Gen Alpha, need to understand the benefits and limits of AI so they are not fooled by what they see online.

If passed the new rule could make AI labels as common as warning signs. And honestly it is about time.
