For the sake of “self-reassurance”, a Form 6 student in Kedah followed her boyfriend for a short trip to Dannok, Thailand, but came back across the border positive for drugs.

23 individuals tested positive for drugs when crossing into Malaysia from Sadao

Kedah National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Director Khairul Anwar pointed out at a press conference that during the operation, law enforcement officers inspected 30 vehicles, and 31 people returning to Malaysia from Thailand were asked to undergo urine tests, of which 23 tested positive for drugs.

He said the 23 people consisted of 19 Malays, one Chinese, and one Indian, aged between 19 and 40, with 19 aged between 19 and 30 and four aged between 30 and 40.

The STPM student was supposed to attend school on 1 September

The Form 6 student, who will be sitting for her STPM examination soon, told her family that she was going to Thailand for the long weekend during National Day, before she crossed the border with her 25-year-old boyfriend by riding a motorcycle.

Kedah AADK enforcement officers launched an enforcement operation at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam from 3 PM on August 31 to 1 PM on September 1. The student said she was supposed to attend school yesterday (September 1), but she was not allowed to cross the border back into Malaysia following the result of her urine test.

The matter is being investigated under Section 3(1)(a) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, and according to Khairul Anwar, many of those arrested were trying drugs for the first time or were taking drugs for excitement in entertainment venues. He stressed that drug abuse often begins with casual experimentation and can eventually develop into serious addiction.

Khairul also said that AADK will continue to carry out operations more frequently.
