Proton e.MAS 5: Malaysia's best starter EV?

The Proton e.MAS 5 is launching in Malaysia very soon and you can now place your booking for only RM99. As announced last Saturday, the e.MAS 5 is positioned as Malaysia’s first affordable EV with a tentative pricing of RM60,000 to RM80,000.

Ahead of the official launch, Pro-Net is offering early bird rewards for the first 5,000 customers. This includes a limited edition TNG card with RM100 reloaded credit and a RM500 rebate. Customers can book the e.MAS 5 for a fee of RM99 at any of their 42 Proton e.MAS dealerships throughout Malaysia.

Take note that the offer is limited to the first 5,000 customers after the car is successfully registered.

Here’s everything you need to know about Proton’s new fully electric hatchback.

Proton e.MAS 5 Prime and Premium Spec

The Proton e.MAS 5 is essentially a B-segment hatchback with the space of a C-segment car. In terms of dimensions, it is 4135mm long, 1805mm wide and 1580mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2650mm.

It is wider and taller than a Perodua Myvi, Toyota Yaris and Honda City Hatchback, but it is slightly shorter than the Toyota Yaris by 5mm.

Unlike most cars in the sub-RM100,000 category, the e.MAS 5 stands out for having a rear-wheel-drive setup and it rides on multi-link independent suspension for the rear. It also boasts a class leading turning radius of 4.95m, which is smaller than a Myvi 1.5L (5.1m).

The Proton e.MAS 5 comes in two variants – Prime and Premium.

For the base-spec Prime, it gets a rear motor that pushes a modest 58kW (78hp) and 130Nm of torque. The battery is smaller too with a 30.12kWh LFP CATL unit that has a WLTP-rated range of 225km.

Meanwhile, the higher-spec Premium gets a more powerful motor driving the rear wheels, delivering 85kW (114hp) and 150Nm of torque. Pro-Net claims that it can accelerate from 0-50km/h in 3.9 seconds.

So far it has yet to reveal its 0-100km/h acceleration figures but the e.MAS 5 claims to be able to brake from 100km/h to zero with a distance of 36.9m.

The Premium also gets a larger 40.16kWh CATL LFP battery with a longer WLTP-rated range of 325km. That’s 20km less than the base-spec Proton e.MAS 7 Prime which has a WLTP-rated range of 345km.

Across the board, the Proton e.MAS 5 comes with 6 airbags, a 14.6″ Full HD display, leatherette seats and a 70L frunk. It offers 375L boot space which can be expanded up to 1,320L with the rear seats folded. In case you’re wondering, Pro-Net says the infotainment display will support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from day one.

With the Premium model, the e.MAS 5 comes equipped with 16″ alloy rims, 360-degree camera, intelligent driver assist functions (ADAS), powered tailgate and LED aerodynamic headlights.

In terms of charging, both spec supports single-phase AC charging up to 6.6kW. For DC charging, it supports up to 71kW (for Premium), and both take approximately 21 minutes to charge from 30-80%.

Proton e.MAS 5 colours and delivery

The Proton e.MAS 5 comes in 5 exterior colours – Marble Cream, Quartz Rose, Moonstone White, Graphite Silver and Slate Grey. The Marble Cream and Quartz Rose are exclusive to the Premium spec model and it comes with Alabaster White interior. Meanwhile, the remaining three colours come with Flint Grey interior.

As revealed by Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang, the deliveries for the Proton e.MAS 5 are expected to begin in November 2025. This also means the official launch where they will reveal the final price should be happening very soon.
