KUCHING, Nov 3: The upcoming establishment of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) marks a major stride in meeting Sarawak’s growing need for legal professionals.
Sarawak Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the new faculty represents a strategic move by the university to expand into fields that are significant to the State’s future and vital to its governance.
“This is a major step forward to meet Sarawak’s need to produce a new generation of legal professionals who are not only well-versed in the technical aspects of the law but also grounded in the values of humanity and social justice,” he said when delivering his speech at Unimas’ 29th Convocation Ceremony, which was broadcast live on the university’s official Facebook page today.
Wan Junaidi, who is also the Unimas Chancellor, expressed confidence that the faculty would support Sarawak’s increasingly complex legal landscape in line with the State government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and legal institutions.
He also lauded the university’s initiative to establish a research chair on Sarawak history, describing it as a meaningful effort to preserve and strengthen the State’s identity.
“History is the foundation of a nation’s soul. Through this chair, I hope Unimas will continue to document and empower Sarawak’s rich heritage for generations to come,” he said.
Addressing the graduates, Wan Junaidi reminded them that their academic success carries a responsibility to serve with integrity and compassion.
“The degree you hold is not just a symbol of achievement, but a trust. Use your knowledge to bring light to others and contribute to the well-being of our society,” he urged.
He added that education must be viewed as a lifelong pursuit of learning, renewal and service, not as an endpoint.
“Education does not end with a scroll. It is a continuous journey that requires humility, discipline and love for the community,” he said. — DayakDaily
