KUCHING, Nov 9: Sarawak’s development is not defined solely by infrastructure or economic growth but by the quality, character and resilience of its people, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised today.
Speaking at the University of Technology Sarawak’s (UTS) 10th Convocation Ceremony today, he said education plays a pivotal role in shaping a progressive, inclusive and knowledgeable society, which is essential for the State’s long-term vision.
“As Sarawak moves with confidence towards becoming a developed State by 2030, education continues to be the pillar supporting a progressive and resilient society,” he said.
Abang Johari stressed that education should not be confined to classroom learning or academic excellence alone, but should serve as a foundation for shaping values, character, and responsibility.
To widen access to quality higher education, he highlighted the State government’s upcoming Free Tertiary Education Scheme, which will take effect in 2026.
He said the initiative will reduce financial barriers for students, particularly those from rural backgrounds and low-income households.
“Without the financial burden of pursuing higher education, more young Sarawakians will have the opportunity to realise their academic dreams and contribute to the State’s economic growth in the future,” he added.
He reaffirmed that Sarawak’s development agenda requires not only infrastructure and economic strategies but also a generation of skilled, confident and forward-thinking young people.
He added that nurturing talent and offering equitable access to education will ensure that the State remains competitive, sustainable and resilient in the decades ahead. —DayakDaily
