MIRI, Nov 18: Seven Sarawakians have successfully completed Shell’s certified welding programme, Projek LINK (Latihan Industri Kimpalan), strengthening Sarawak’s talent pipeline for heavy industries such as oil and gas, shipping, construction, and energy as the initiative marked another milestone with its graduation ceremony at the Grand Palace Hotel here.
The programme, a collaboration between Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) and Miri Vocational College (KV Miri), aims to nurture highly skilled welders capable of meeting global industry standards.
Since its inception, Projek LINK has produced 865 graduates who have secured employment both locally and internationally.
Trainees are equipped to meet internationally recognised certifications such as ASME IX and AWS, while mastering advanced techniques including the demanding 6G and 6GR positions.
Shell Malaysia Upstream’s Sarawak Central Luconia general manager Choong Yen Li emphasised that Projek LINK, which also supports students who may face financial or academic challenges, exemplifies strong public-private collaboration in advancing human capital development.
“I am delighted to see all our graduates today and extend my heartiest congratulations to each of them.
“I am proud of SSB’s longstanding partnership with KV Miri, which has enabled our efforts in contributing towards the development of employment opportunities, creating internationally sought-after talent, and empowering the economic growth of the local communities here in Sarawak, while supporting the Sarawak government’s initiative to drive human capital development in the oil and gas sector,” she said in a media release today.
Beyond Miri, the programme is also implemented in Sabah and Bintulu through Shell Malaysia’s partnerships with Likad Vocational College (KV Likas) and Bintulu Vocational College (KV Bintulu), widening opportunities for youth across the region.
As one of the pioneers in Malaysia’s energy industry, Shell Malaysia continues to invest in developing local talent as the nation navigates the energy transition. — DayakDaily
