KUCHING, Dec 8: Regenerative fashion has moved to the forefront of Sarawak’s creative agenda following a call by Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to breathe new life into heritage textiles through contemporary design.
According to him, regenerative fashion offers a sustainable way to protect traditional craftsmanship by giving older or damaged fabrics a second life.
“We must transform the faded Songket and torn Pua Kumbu into modern accessories, appealing to youth and ensuring our heritage lives on the streets of London and Tokyo.
“Instead of allowing woven textiles to fade in storage, the approach encourages artisans and designers to reinterpret them into bags, jewellery, footwear and other everyday accessories while maintaining their cultural motifs,” he said at the launch of the Borneo International Textile Festival (BiTF) 2025 here on Sunday (Dec 7).
Regenerative fashion remains a central theme as BiTF 2025 continues, with organisers emphasising its potential to connect traditional craft communities with emerging designers.
Abdul Karim said the movement could position Songket and Pua Kumbu in modern fashion spaces worldwide while ensuring the cultural stories woven into each piece remain intact.
