As online fraud cases hog headlines, Digital Ministry’s Cakna Digital Carnival aims to boost digital awareness

KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia accelerates its digital transformation and positions itself to become an artificial intelligence (AI) nation by 2030, the government is keen to ensure no one is left behind in the digital race.

The Digital Ministry is intensifying efforts to strengthen digital awareness and understanding, including among rural communities, as police statistics show nearly RM3 billion in losses from online fraud reported between January and November this year.

In collaboration with its agency CyberSecurity Malaysia, the ministry initiated the Cakna Digital Carnival to address these concerns and cultivate a digitally savvy population.

The carnival, held on Dec 20-21 at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara in Lenggong, Perak, was officiated by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. Also present at the opening ceremony was Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar.

The event attracted participants from all walks of life across Lenggong and surrounding areas.

The Cakna Digital Carnival 2025 focuses on fostering a comprehensive digital culture, covering personal data protection, cybersecurity, and the prevention of online scams, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in Malaysia.

“According to police statistics, 67,735 cases of online fraud involving losses exceeding RM2.77 billion were recorded between January and November 2025, highlighting the urgent need to bolster digital literacy among the public,” the ministry said in a recent statement.

Key highlights of the carnival included:

• Providing guidance to local entrepreneurs on marketing village products through digital platforms such as TikTok Shop

• Interactive sessions to help participants identify fraudulent messages and websites

• Guidance on using financial mobile applications safely

• Introducing Portal Rakyat Digital, a free online learning platform offering six modules on digital technologies, including AI and blockchain

The carnival also featured competitions, interactive digital quizzes, and digital health screenings, making it an inclusive platform for all Malaysians – from children to senior citizens.

“The Cakna Digital Carnival 2025 is expected to deliver a positive impact on the local community by increasing digital literacy, opening new economic opportunities for rural entrepreneurs, and strengthening social networks through active community involvement in the national digitalisation agenda,” the ministry added.

“Furthermore, the programme promotes Lenggong as a progressive digital community destination, in line with the government’s aspiration to develop an inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem.

“Such initiatives not only extend digital reach to rural areas but also empower communities to use technology with confidence and safety, supporting the goal of building a competitive, ethical and resilient Malaysian digital community.”
