The Ministry of Education has announced that students no longer have to wear neckties to school starting 2026, based on a circular dated 17 December 2025 that was signed by Director-General of Education Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad.
The decision on neckties was made after the ministry’s 2025 Special Professional Meeting on 8 December.
The policy takes into account Malaysia’s hot and humid weather, which makes wearing neckties daily uncomfortable, while also aiming to reduce costs for families.
However, the ministry added that students can still wear neckties if the school and parents reach a mutual agreement on the matter.
The ministry emphasised that no party is permitted to coerce or pressure students into wearing neckties.
