An Indonesian woman recently claimed that she was operated on without consent and treated badly in Malaysia, specifically at the Sunway Medical Centre in Sunway City.

The woman publicly shared this on Indonesian beauty doctor and social media influencer Richard Lee’s YouTube video.

The woman was allegedly hospitalised because she experienced serious pain in her stomach area. She claimed she was hit and held down during the operation. She also claimed the doctor told her to be grateful that he operated on her to save her life and that she’ll survive because she’s young.

In the comments, some found her claims to be suspicious and warned the woman and Lee that they might face a billion ringgit suit.

A user wondered why the woman never lodged a complaint or report before getting discharged.

However, some believe this viral incident was a ploy to sabotage Malaysia’s medical tourism by making Indonesians wary of seeking treatment in Malaysia so they will consult with local doctors instead.

Sunway Medical Centre responds

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City said it was aware of the viral issue and has released an official statement to address it.

Calling the allegations false, the hospital said all investigations were conducted and completed based on clinical evidence since the patient’s discharge.

They are currently engaging constructively with the patient’s appointed legal representatives, in line with their obligations around patient confidentiality.

However, they will not share further specific details of the process out of respect for patient confidentiality.

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City reiterated its commitment to serve patients and provide care with professionalism, compassion, and integrity.

Who is Dr Richard Lee?

Dr Richard Lee is a cosmetic doctor who runs the Athena Beauty Clinic brand and related skincare businesses. He built a large online following by sharing skincare advice, including discussing ingredients in products that may pose health risks.

Lee was previously involved in a criminal case following a complaint by content creator Samira Farahnaz aka Dokter Detektif or Doktif.

Samira uses her Dokter Detektif persona to investigate and publicly call out suspicious third-party skincare products and marketing claims. She does this by sharing laboratory test results and this has made her a polarising figure among brands, consumers, and even other influencers.

Samira and Lee’s feud has been simmering for more than a year and it came to a head in December last year.

In December, Samira lodged a police report against Lee after Samira claimed the beauty products endorsed by the doctor had concerning ingredients.

Lee retaliated by filing a defamation suit against Samira, claiming she harmed his reputation online.
