A video of a man repeatedly hitting children using a rotan (whipping cane) and throwing a chair at one of the victims went viral on social media recently.

Police have arrested the 38-year-old man at a house in Petaling Jaya yesterday (18 January).

According to Sinar Harian, Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsulmuddin Mamat said the suspect is the uncle of the children, who are aged between eight and 11.

He said police received reports of the incident at around 1.21pm last Friday (16 January).

Shamsulmuddin also said several items were seized to assist in the investigation.

“The case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act. A remand application for the suspect will be made at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court today,” he said.

The Section criminalises child abuse and is punishable by law with a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not more than RM50,000.

Viewer discretion advised: the video contains upsetting scenes.

Child’s mistreatment of grandmother was what allegedly prompted the abuse

In posts spotted by TRP on social media, a separate video showed the man’s nephew mistreating an elderly woman believed to be the boy’s grandmother.

The boy could be heard screaming at his grandmother while throwing a major tantrum, and later began acting physically aggressive towards her, pulling her off the chair she was sitting on and shoving and hitting her with his hands.

Again, viewer discretion is advised as the video contains scenes of physical abuse that may cause distress.

In the comments section, people are divided on the child’s punishment, with some expressing that it was extremely cruel, and others feeling that it was a suitable disciplinary exercise.

A few individuals speculated that the child may have behaviour issues, and that he may need professional care and treatment.
