Cobain death re-examined: Private team suggests homicide, not suicide
1 day ago
DECADES after Kurt Cobain, the iconic frontman of Nirvana, was found dead in his Seattle home, a private group of forensic investigators claims new evidence suggests his death may have been a homicide rather than a suicide.
Cobain, 27, was officially declared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 1994.
The Seattle Police Department and the King County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a suicide, but questions have persisted over the years.
Now, an unofficial team of researchers has analysed crime scene photographs, autopsy reports, and toxicology results, concluding that the circumstances surrounding Cobain’s death raise serious doubts about the official account.
The team’s report notes that Cobain’s blood contained 1.52mg/L of morphine—three times a lethal dose—yet he reportedly managed to shoot himself.
They argue this is unlikely and suggest that he may have been rendered helpless by heroin before being shot, with a suicide note allegedly placed at the scene afterwards.
Michelle Wilkins, an independent researcher who worked with the team, told the Daily Mail that the investigation reached its conclusion within three days of revisiting the evidence.
“This is a homicide. We’ve got to do something about this,” Wilkins said.
She described the scene as “staged like a movie,” pointing to details such as the receipt for the gun and shells in Cobain’s pocket, and the shells lined neatly at his feet.
“Suicides are messy, and this was a very clean scene,” she added.
Wilkins also highlighted discrepancies in the autopsy, explaining that “the necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose. It doesn’t happen in a shotgun death.”
Questions were also raised over whether Cobain could have physically lifted the shotgun in his state, and why his left hand, found holding the gun barrel, showed no blood.
The researchers further examined Cobain’s final note, suggesting that the last four lines may not have been written by him.
“The top of the note is written by Kurt … there’s nothing about suicide in that. It’s basically him just talking about quitting the band,” Wilkins said.
The investigation involved forensic specialist Brian Burnett, who reviewed the materials and supported the homicide theory.
According to Wilkins, the team’s report identifies ten points of concern, including organ damage consistent with oxygen deprivation prior to the gunshot, and the possibility of a staged scene involving a heroin overdose and a forged note.
Seattle authorities told the Daily Mail that the case remains officially closed as a suicide.
Many fans have long questioned whether Cobain’s death was indeed self-inflicted, and this latest investigation adds fresh fuel to that debate. - February 12, 2026
