Beastars Season 3 Final Part Ending Explained: What Happened To Legoshi?

Netflix’s brilliant anime adaptation of Paru Itagaki’s masterpiece, “Beastars,” came to a beautiful end, answering the burning questions about interspecies relationships that the narrative posed through its three seasons. The extremely complex dynamics between carnivores and herbivores, which essentially define the quintessential nature of life itself, find no easy solution in terms of trying to strike a balance in the dialectical relationship of nature and nurture. Also, the final part of the final season provides closure to the individual arcs of all the characters, as Legoshi, Haru, and Louis learn to accept their reality while trying to make the world a better place for all the species. Despite how well the conclusion is handled, it’s quite upsetting that we won’t get to see a continuation of this soulful series.

Spoilers Ahead

Melon Shows Interest in Haru

In the final moments of the first part of the final season, Legoshi tried to reason with Melon, the gazelle-cheetah hybrid, the psychopathic leader of Shishi Gumi who wanted to disrupt the coexistence between carnivores and herbivores. Mocking Legoshi’s kindness and idea of coexistence, Melon tied him up and threw him from a cliff to the sea. As the final part begins, Legoshi nearly drowns until a great white shark tries to devour him, and he uses aquatic animal speech he learned from his spotted seal friend, Sagwan, to communicate. The shark helps Legoshi to reach the shore by carrying him on his back, saving his life in the process. The interaction has altered Legoshi’s psyche, as he has recognized the darkness and primal instincts in Melon, which rest dormant in himself, which he has been trying to suppress all his life. Louis checks up on Legoshi and, getting surprised upon learning that he was going after Melon, chides him for acting irresponsibly. While investigating the Kines drink situation, Louis came across Melon for a brief while and was able to ascertain that he was up to no good.

Meanwhile, posing as a certain Professor Lumrong, Melon has joined Cherryton and is secretly orchestrating a series of devouring incidents, specifically targeting interspecies couples. Throughout the final part, Melon’s traumatic past as a hybrid comes into focus, as it is revealed his mother was a mentally unstable cheetah who couldn’t handle the tragic fact that she devoured her own gazelle husband and wanted to keep their son captive with her inside her fantasy world. When Melon realized his mother wanted to kill him as well and couldn’t bear his hybrid appearance, he ended up murdering her out of fear. While Melon was a student in Cherryton, he was abused by his peers who despised him for his hybrid identity and wanted him to take his own life. A young Melon had exacted revenge by killing all of them. One of the academy teachers, Dorin, had bullied Melon during his young days, and right after joining Cherryton as a professor, Melon took his revenge on her by pushing her through the rooftop. The incident is marked as suicide, but Haru, who had noticed someone to be present on the rooftop, mistakenly confides in the sweet-talking new professor. Melon looked down upon herbivores by considering them weak; initially he considered Haru a frail herbivore and nearly decided to consume her. However, Haru’s fearless, lively spirit amazes Melon, who decides to suppress his carnivore urges. For Melon, who has always believed in expressing carnivores’ true instincts no matter what, this is a telling gesture.

Legoshi and Louis’ Struggle With Self-Acceptance

After spending a day with his longtime canine buddies, Legoshi brings his best friend, Jack the labrador, to his apartment and learns from him how he has been afflicted with a deep sense of self-loathing after realizing as an intelligent, so-called obedient dog, he has to accept the cruel, unforgivable reality as it is. Legoshi tries to comfort his friend, and as Jack leaves, Legoshi’s howl cheers him up. This gesture is crucial, as this marks Legoshi’s effort to accept his identity as a wolf. The current Beastar, Yahya, meets with Legoshi and learns details about his past interaction with Melon. For Legoshi, taking down Melon is important not only to contain his potential for chaos, but also because it can allow him to remove his past devouring record by striking a deal with Yahya—which is crucial if he wants to have a future with his girlfriend, Haru. As viewers will surely remember, Legoshi consensually devoured Louis’ leg to get himself strong enough to defend his friends from Riz, the brown bear.

Haru spends a night with Legoshi and, assuaging his fears of harming her, decides to get physically close. The next morning, Legoshi’s inner fears manifest in a dreadful manner when he mistakenly believes that he has killed Haru, only to learn later that she is safe and sound. Certain about his feelings for her, Legoshi proposes marriage to her. Louis has his own situation going on, as he is caught between the conflict of searching for his own dreams and fulfilling the expectations of his adoptive father, Ogma. Mayor Lion has planned to bring the prestigious Zoolympics to the town to bolster his political image and endorses Louis as the upcoming Beastar. Securing funding for the organizing Zoolympics from Ogma’s Horns Conglomerate, the mayor wants Louis to promote lab-grown fake meat in the mega sports event and use this opportunity to wipe out the black market of meat selling once and for all. Louis doesn’t want to promote an idea that asks carnivores to suppress their urges and instead wants a balance between species. Louis tries to maintain his arranged relationship with Azuki, which he has to continue to promote Ogma’s business prospects by joining two influential business families, but eventually opens up to her about his true feelings for carnivores, and they agree to live in a loveless marriage out of convenience.

The Shishigumi crime gang lions have become dismayed over Melon’s destructive nature of leadership, and as Melon remains absent for a long time, they try to convince Louis to once again assume the role of leadership, to no avail. Louis and Haru catch up after a long time, and he becomes alarmed upon learning that she has been unknowingly interacting with Melon in close proximity. Louis informs Legoshi of his findings, and Legoshi confronts Melon once again. Upon learning Legoshi’s relationship with Haru, Melon tries to manipulate him by equating a carnivore’s love for an herbivore as nothing but a glorified hunter-prey relationship. In reality, as a hybrid, Melon has faced so much discrimination that he wants to overwhelm the world with his inner darkness. Legoshi manages to nearly detain Melon, but he ends up evading capture once again. As fate would have it, Legoshi ends up getting framed for the murders Melon has committed, and to evade imprisonment, he decides to lay low for a while. He finds help from a most unexpected ally, as a five-hundred-strong gang of cornered rats provides him shelter in the subterranean depths.

Striving for Correlation Through Art

The Cherryton drama club, where tiger headmaster Gon had to segregate carnivore and herbivore students after rising cases of interspecies conflicts, tries to express their desire for coexistence by holding onto drama and art. Juno, the freshman female wolf, tries to convince Pina, the proud sheep, to join the club as the members plan to present their performance on carnivore-herbivore relationships. Pina wants to challenge the norms by making carnivores assume the role of herbivores in the drama, and vice versa, in order to truly convey the intended message. He gets a heartfelt, poignant lesson in exploration of such dynamics when drama club president, Bill the Bengal Tiger, comes across a chick born from a fertilized egg he was about to consume. Pina witnesses Bill initially consider to consume the hatchling, only to suppress his urges upon knowing Pina knows about the situation and decide to care for the chick. Bill becomes lost by getting busy to look after the chick and crestfallen when the chick meets an unfortunate end. The established equation between the two species is pretty simple; complications arise when empathy and love get added up.

In Legoshi’s absence, his grandfather, Gosha, takes care of Haru and opens up about his interspecies relationship with his gray wolf wife, Toki. As a Komodo dragon, Gosha feared his toxic skin might harm his wife, and even after the birth of their daughter, Leano (Legoshi’s mother), he remained wary about his own presence around his wife. Toki loved Gosha for who he really was and embraced death by willingly getting close to him. On the other hand, Melon reassumes his position as Shishigumi chief and, to dominate the black market, decides to participate in the turf war that is going to take place on meat appreciation day. Coincidentally, the same day is celebrated as the meteor festival, where Mayor Lion wants to unveil his plans of Zoolympics, artificial meat, and a black market ban, entrusting Louis to preside over the event. Upon being informed about Melon’s activities, Legoshi decides to take part as the fifth contestant in the turf war as a lone member against the Shishigumi lions, Madara Gumi leopards, Inari Gumi foxes, and Toki Gumi komodo dragons. His aim is to take down Melon once and for all, and despite having the risk of getting caught by the authorities, Legoshi takes the chance.

What Happened to Legoshi And Louis?

Melon tries to kill Deshico, the researcher civet, who provided Melon with the experimental carnivore-triggering Melda drug, after learning that he has found a way to weaken the hybrids. Louis saves Deshico just in time and learns that the fume from a concoction created by mixing carnivore and herbivore blood acts as a coagulant, which hybrids can’t tolerate. Planning to use this as a deterrent against Melon in Legoshi’s upcoming fight against him, Louis reaches out to Horns Conglomerate researcher Chloe, who reveals shocking news to him about artificial meat. As it turns out, the artificial meat is made of fetal embryos, something that Ogma came to know erstwhile and wanted to stop the mayor’s plan of promoting it during the Zoolympics bidding announcement. However, Ogma later became silent about it, asking Chloe to proceed according to the mayor’s plan instead. As Louis looks into Horns Conglomerate’s finances, he realizes they are sustaining major loss due to sponsoring the costly sports event and confronts Ogma about it, to no avail. Eventually, Ogma’s butler Yuta reveals Mayor Lion extorted Ogma to grant huge funding and a bribe to keep the fact a secret that he brought Louis from the black market and raised him as his own son. Louis remembers the mayor blackmailing him in the past as well, but he was under the false impression that the record of his origin was removed. The mayor also forced Ogma to remain silent about the heinous fake meat conspiracy by using his knowledge about Louis as leverage. Louis feels a sense of gratitude towards Ogma, who isn’t the profit-minded cold guardian he thought he was. He plans to expose the mayor during the meteor festival speech but continues to hesitate till the final moment.

On the other hand, Gosha tries to convince Yahya to call the authorities off of Legoshi’s pursuit by showing him a letter his grandson had sent to him, but surprisingly, Yahya remains resolute about the fact that Legoshi is a fugitive. Before participating in the turf war, Legoshi returns to his mentor, black market guardian giant panda Gohin, to extract his own blood for the initiation ritual.

All hell breaks loose in turf war when Melon decides to kill his own crew member and causes a chaotic situation by persuading the present members to give in to their baser instincts. Legoshi gets engaged in a battle against Savon, the Komodo group leader, and Ten, the fox group leader, and showing his humility, perseverance, and honorable nature, gets their respect. Melon begins thrashing Legoshi, who appears on the verge of defeat, and their bloody battle is live-streamed across the city. To show their support, Jack and the rest of Legoshi’s canine friends howl, which Legoshi replies to and gets motivated enough to fight back.

The tides of the battle turn when Chloe, assisted by five hundred cornered rat gang, creates the blood concoction fume, which weakens Melon significantly. Coming back to their senses, the crime gang leaders refuse to continue their fight, and Melon finds humor in the prospect of coexistence amidst chaos. Legoshi still has not given up on Melon and tries to make him see reason by sympathizing with him. Unable to project his own crooked worldview onto others, Melon shoots himself, presumably to death, and taunts Legoshi by saying he has a surprise planned for Haru in the meteor festival. Legoshi rushes towards the meteor festival, where Louis has already started exposing the mayor by revealing the truth of his past in public on his own. Louis emphasizes freedom of choice despite the risks that may entail. Louis reveals the mayor’s secretive agendas, sending the lion in a fit of rage as he finally sheds his façade to attack Louis by assuming his true carnivore self. Legoshi arrives just in time to intercept and incapacitates the mayor by biting him.

As the crowd recognizes Legoshi as the murderous fugitive (which he is not), they fear his presence and demand authorities to detain him. However, Haru approaches a battle-worn, bloodied Legoshi, revealing his true nature, and shares a kiss with him, which not only validates their own interspecies relationship but also encourages others to extend support to the ones entangled in such a loving bond. Yahya arrives and shows his support to Legoshi, and words from the Beastar are enough to convince the people about Legoshi’s true intentions. Gosha reunites with his old friend Yahya, and they consider both Legoshi and Louis to be Beastars.

As the series finally comes to an end, Melon’s final fate remains a mystery as it is revealed that he might be alive after all. In the aftermath of his feral actions, the mayor gets detained by the authorities. The Cherryton drama club successfully enact their drama and receive adulation from the audience. Juno couldn’t find love, as her crush, Louis, rejected her. Legoshi and Haru are in a loving relationship, and their bond will inspire future generations to come.
