Golden Screen Cinemas is bringing a selection of internationally acclaimed films to Malaysian audiences this month through its GSC International Screens Awards Showcase.
The curated programme features three highly anticipated titles widely tipped as contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards: The President’s Cake and Hamnet, both opening on 5 March, followed by Bugonia on 12 March. The films will screen at selected GSC locations nationwide.
Leading the lineup is The President’s Cake, written and directed by Hasan Hadi. The Iraqi drama marks an impressive feature debut and gained international recognition after winning the prestigious Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival during the Directors’ Fortnight section, alongside the Audience Award.
The film stars breakout young talent Baneen Ahmad Nayyef alongside Sajad Mohamad Qasem, Waheed Thabet Khreibat and Rahim AlHaj. With its emotionally grounded storytelling and powerful performances, the film represents Iraq’s first-ever submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards.
Also featured is Hamnet, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Set in 16th-century England, the film explores the emotional relationship between legendary playwright William Shakespeare and his son Hamnet. Blending poetic storytelling with striking visuals, the film reflects on grief, memory and artistic inspiration, offering a poignant perspective on the events believed to have influenced one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies.
Completing the showcase is Bugonia, directed by acclaimed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Oscar nominee Will Tracy. Known for his distinctive cinematic style, Lanthimos has previously directed celebrated films including Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Favourite.
Together, the three films highlight a diverse range of global storytelling and filmmaking perspectives. Through the Awards Showcase, GSC International Screens continues its commitment to championing world cinema and bringing award-calibre films to Malaysian audiences.
The GSC International Screens Awards Showcase runs from 5 March onwards at selected cinemas.
