KUCHING, Apr 17: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has not ruled out the possibility of considering salary cuts for Cabinet ministers should the country’s economic situation become more challenging.
In a TVS news report, Anwar said that such consideration would depend on current needs and the level of economic pressure faced by the country.
“Our salaries (ministers) are already relatively low. But what is important is that we serve well.
“I have no problem—I do not take a salary. But the salary is their (ministers’) entitlement as long as they perform well, and I will consider it,” he said when met by reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Bomba Cyberjaya today.
He said this in response to whether Malaysia would adopt a similar stance to Indonesia in tackling economic pressures.
Earlier, it was reported that the Indonesian government is considering cutting its ministers’ salaries to tighten fiscal measures. — DayakDaily
