KUCHING, Apr 28: The Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0 will seek a Malaysia Book of Records entry through a coordinated street parade involving 24 ethnic associations as the event returns on a larger scale with regional and international participation, including representation from Yunnan, China.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the participation reflects a rare convergence of diverse communities and highlights Sarawak’s multicultural identity.
“This is the first time I have seen such a large gathering representing so many ethnic groups at once. It reflects the diversity of Sarawak,” he said during a press conference for the event held at Baitulmakmur 2 today.
Scheduled from July 1 to 12 in Miri, the carnival will bring together groups from across Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and Indonesia as well as international cultural representation from Yunnan. Programme highlights include cultural showcases, competitions and themed performance nights with a soft launch on July 3 followed by an official opening on July 4.
The main highlight of the event will be the opening street parade, which is expected to feature all 24 participating ethnic groups in a coordinated procession showcasing traditional attire, performances and cultural expressions as part of the Malaysia Book of Records attempt.
“Participation from Yunnan adds an international dimension to the event and positions the carnival as a platform for cultural exchange beyond Borneo.
“Similarities in traditions, attire and practices between communities in Sarawak and Yunnan could support further cultural understanding and research,” he added.
The fourth edition marks a strong return after disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with expanded regional and international involvement.
According to organisers, the event will also feature a cultural village showcasing traditional cuisine, crafts, attire and performances alongside a commercial and food zone with more than 100 stalls involving local and regional entrepreneurs.
The carnival is part of efforts to position Miri as a cultural tourism destination in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 while supporting the growth of the local creative industry. — DayakDaily
