Bung Bratak Heritage Centre now enjoys 24-hour electricity supply under RM1 mln allocation

BAU, May 1: The Bung Bratak Heritage Centre is now enjoying a 24-hour electricity supply following a RM1 million allocation under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said the funding is aimed at upgrading facilities at the heritage site and enabling more activities involving the community, private sector, and government agencies to be carried out at the centre.

“With the provision of 24-hour electricity, more programmes can be organised here, and I hope the management will continue to promote Bung Bratak Heritage Centre to the public and relevant agencies,” he said during the Bung Bratak Day 2026 celebration today.

He further expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the allocation to GKCDA, noting that the agency supports development efforts not only in Opar but also in Tasik Biru, Serembu, and other Bidayuh-majority areas under its coverage.

Billy also said Bung Bratak Day is more than just an annual event, but a symbol of identity and pride for the Bidayuh community.

The event commemorates the history of early Bidayuh migration and settlement in Bung Bratak, including the legacy of warrior Kulow, who defended the area and remains remembered to this day.

On the Bung Bratak Heritage Centre, Billy said its establishment goes beyond physical development, as it plays a vital role in preserving Bidayuh history and identity, particularly of the Jagoi-Bijagoi community.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) and Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, Serembu assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh, GKCDA chief executive officer Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi, Temenggong Atok Derop and Bung Bratak Heritage Association chairman Rayan Narong.
