No signal of early GE16. says Fahmi as focus remains on governance and reform

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has stated that there is no indication from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Malaysia’s 16th General Election will be held this year, amid growing political speculation over the timing of both national and state-level polls.

Fahmi, who also serves as the coalition’s communications director, said the Prime Minister has consistently emphasised that the government must remain focused on resolving the people’s issues rather than election timing.

“There is no indication from the Prime Minister, but he has reminded leaders and Members of Parliament to always be prepared for any possibility,” he said.

He added that while attention has turned to potential electoral developments in several states, including Johor, there has been no confirmation of imminent polls.

“This includes state elections such as in Johor. While we know Johor may face elections, perhaps not now, but it is not impossible in the not-too-distant future,” he said.

Fahmi made the remarks when met after the Lembah Pantai Teachers’ Day celebration on Thursday, where he reiterated that the government’s immediate priority remains policy implementation and reform delivery.

“The focus of leaders, especially those serving in the Cabinet, is to ensure that our plans to bring about change and reform can be implemented as effectively as possible,” he said.

He also pointed to the upcoming coalition national convention in Johor as a key moment in shaping political messaging and preparing organisational readiness ahead of any possible elections.

“In his message, we will receive the direction amid speculation surrounding the possibility of state elections in Johor, Melaka and beyond,” he said.

Fahmi said the Prime Minister, who is also Pakatan Harapan coalition chairman, is expected to outline strategic direction at the convention, which will guide both election preparedness and internal coordination.

“Certainly, the address from the coalition’s top leadership will set the framework that will subsequently guide the election machinery at both state and national levels in terms of preparations and seat negotiations,” he said. - May 14, 2026
